He was driving a span of horses, one of which became frightened and made a bound forward break ing the tongue wrench, the double tree striking the horses heels which added to their fright. The team ran straight for the fence which had a barbed wire on top. One horse jumped the fence and had several ugly wounds inllicted which will give him a rest of several weeks, if indeed he recovers at all Lebanon F.xnres!. Hie I'Hriloii of Krunn Concerning the pardon recently issued to one Brow n, the Ashland Tidings says: Clint Brown, who was sentenced to the penitentiary for life for the murder of Johnny Waiker, in Klamath county, was last week pardoned by the g iveriu r and released from custody. The Salem Capital Journal says: "A strong petition and recommenda tion of the district attorney caused the cessation of a sentence which is now said should never have been imposed." This is not true so far as the district attorney cf the judicial district is concerned. Some tw years ago an attempt was made to secure Brown's par don, and, as required by the law, the governor wrote to the District Attorney, Colvig, asking his "pinion as to the ipiostion of par don. The district attorney replied that ';it would be an outrage on public justice," and bis answer I is on lile in the excutive oflice. lie has not changed Ins opinon since. It may be possible that T. R. Kent, w ho was district attorney at the time and conducted the pro secution (and who has since been sent to the insane asyhunj was induced to recommend the pardon, but the district attorney has not done so. Brown had a fair trial and was defended by Cogswell, llanna and Prim, and the ilea that his sentence should Put have been imposed never entered the public mind. Many people who know Brown have expressed the opinion that this is a ca-e of mis taken clemency on the pirt. of the governor, and that Brow n's liberty is a menace to the lives of persons against w hom be bo'.ls a grudge for their connection with the up plication ol just:c- to his case in ihe past. Very many people are fond of the edible mushroom, but the experience of a C rant's Pass fain i ly should induce caution in that respect at least. The Courier of that place relates this incident: "Thursday last Mrs. John Patiick prepared for dinner what she sup posed to be mushrooms, having often prepared them in the eastern states where they are used quite common for food by epicureans. The entirely family ate quite free ly, when in a few hours their little son Roily was taken suddenly ill, :nl a! out the fm: tim'thjir i n t If daughter Retina, who was at school, was taken in a like man ner. They were on the verge of going into spasms when Dr. De Yore was immediately called, and was informed by Mis. Patrick that they had eaten what they suppos ed to be the regular mushroom, but must have been toadstools. The doctor worked hard and faith ful, but it was some time until the medicine gav relief. In a few hours, however, both were out of danger: but it was a very close call indeed for the little girl, from the fact that it was very dillicult to swallow the emetics. Such acci dents are quite common in this state, especially in those families w ho have recently arrived from the east as it requires a very cau tious expert to tell the difference between an eastern mushroom and an Oregon toadstool, and in not a few cases have proved fatal in this state within the last lew yeais When you are constipated, have headache, or loss of appetite take Dr. McLean's Liver and Kidney Pillets; they are pleasant to take and will cure vou. IllItL ATIII.KTKS. ltony Chf-eksaiul a Brink Walk are Fashionable All the girls are going in for health and athletics. They must not they siiup!y must not' appear sick. They must have a fine color bright eyes, glossy hair, round elbows and a long swinging gait that is half a dog trot, or sjne body may be ltd to think that they are not marvels if strength an I robustness. "Does this yellow make me loot pale or sick?" asked a girl of another in the street last week. "When the sun sli, nes upon me I fancy that the yellow of my diess makes my complexion appear bad. Now notice particularly when we come to the next op:-m space be tween the houses and tell me hon estly if you think I look the least bit sallow." "What shall you do with the dress if it is unbecoming?" "Why throw it away, or put it away, or give it away, "or do some thing else with it, of course. I couldn't afford, for the sake of my position in seciety, to wear any thing that makes ine appear in delicate health. I shouldn't b invited anywhere. It wouldn't do at all, you'know; it really wouldn't do. It is so out of style to be sick or delicate or even frail in appear ance." And so the girls to insure the health which is now so necessary to their social standing have pro vided themselves with chatelaines uptin which hang half a dozen boxes of gold or silver, set with jewels and in which is a collection of medicine, tonics and more or less stimulating drugs a gold chatelaine with six or seven gold bottles or boxes hanging there from containing quinine capsules warranted to hold the pangs of la grippe at hay, digestion tablets, laxative lozenges, purgative pellets cough drops, silver- coated pepper mint caehous. glycerine cubes an.! a variety of tonic pills to keep the system in general good order.
