Arrives Departa .;ll.13pmllz.S0pm J 3.10pm!7.45am Alt!., SELF EDUCATED, VS.COLLEGE BRED. There ia a constant friction be tween those whose financial situa- ' tiona precluded them from taking academic courses, but who have risen to distinction through the force of their own energy and self- ' instruction, and those who have been made the recipients of a lib- . oral college education. The college bred man claims that his advantages and acquirements are superior, while the self educated man claims that the gaining of that education has been the very means of enlarging his powers and acumen above the mediocrity. The Pittsburg Dispatch in review ing the question, says that the assertion of Charlee A. Dana, in nia speech on Horace Greeley, that he was a man of no education at all except what he had acquired hlauelf, and that this was a great disadvantage to him, has elicited considerable discussion pro and con. Mr. Dana recognized Gree ley's remarkable abilities, and a lair construction of his language is that the subject of the oration could have made his abilities ot far greater efiect if he had started with the advantages of college training. Nevertheless such a sweeping declaration as, "there is no greater misfortune for a man of extraordinary talent than to be educated by himself, becauee he ia of necessity a very poor school . master, ' warrants some of the . sarcastic retorts taking "the re markably successful career of Greeley as an illustration of the . disadvantages of self-education.' The fact is that a great deal of dis put about the advantages or dis j . ... auvaniages 01 sen-education is necessarily befogged by an uncer tainty of terms. Taking the word in its broadest sense, all men who have earned eminence in any sphere of effort are self-educated whether in political or social philosophy, scientific investigation or commercial effort, every sue ceesful man knows he has gained bis greatest knowledge and his most complete grasp of details of his especial work by the thorough lessons of practical experience. If a man is not self-educated in the sense of learning for himself the lessons of life, the judgment of haman, nature and the complete mastery of the details of his special line of effort, he will never amount to much, whether he goes through college or not. Of course this is not the kind of education in dispute, but is important in this discussion as showing what tie training of colleges and books - aaust have reference to. But the discussion of the value of college training must depend on the kind of education that obtains there. Th college teaches its student that it will at best only give him a groundwork for beginning the greater education of practical ex perience. If it trains in him habiU of mind that will digest the reasons of life more advantageous ly, and impresses him with the seeming paradox that the object of education is to teach us that at best we know comparatively noth ing, then Mr. Dana is right in say iog that even a man like Greeley Wbold have been better off if he atari started in life with that ad vantage. Bat if the preliminary education starts the graduate into actual life with an idea that the compiehenaion of the digamma, or theoretical familiarity with conic sections, places him on a plane of .mental superiority above men who have learned the lessons of actual work, then Mr. Dana's criticism are right. The first thing a student who baa received such an education has to do is to unlearn his lessons, and it sometimes takes him all his life to do it. PsccUAWTisH in the manufac- ure of wearing apparel are met with in various nationalities, but now conies the luost peculiar 8tory upon the aubject vouched for by the Scientific American. It ia to the effect that the anthropologi cal department of the Smithsonian Institute has received from Dr. Macgowan a pair of stockings manufactured from human hair. They are worn by fishermen over cotton stockings (beiDg too rough for the skin) and under straw shoes as a protection against moisture. Hair, unsuitable for textile purposes is collected from barbers' shops and sent to a part of the province for manuring rice fields, which, it would seem, are deficient in silica. Tug appropriation for the Stewart Institute, and Indian school at Carson, Nevada, liavine, run short, word was received from Washington, by Superintendent Gibson, that employees who di desired to remain must work from May 10th to July 1st, without com pensation of any kind, and must a'so pay the government recular rates for board and lodging during this time as before. Principal, teacher, seamstress, assistant ma tron and industrial teacher passed in their resignation. The action on the part of the ones who handed in their resignations, shows that they were not imbued with any greot share of patriotism. It was the lucre that they drew that kept them in the places, and when any diiuunition came to that they were not. Thkre is much grumbling by certain parties in this country over the taxation matter, but if ac counts are true there must Incon siderable more foundation for talk in conversative Englaud upon that subjret than there is here, and growing no better fast. It is said that land legislation of England is likely to cost her a pretty penny, if we may judge from the fact that 30,000,000 are deemed inadequate for advances under the measure during the coming year. Adding $150,000,000 to the nation's in- a a i . ueoieaness every yeai lor a lejy years 10 come win not make tne British taxpayers fall deply in love with land reform scheme. Beautiful Goods for Men.
