Very many of the cheiished notions so long believed in by a majority of people, have to be modified under the liyht of actual example and experience. Take for instance the idea that long lifeand rivilied modes of "ociety were not compatible, which has at tained the extent of almost uni ver nal bf lief, and the facts do not bear out tiie assumption. The Milwaukee Sentiual cites a case Waring on this prevalent idea that ahows its fallacy. It is that of Von Moltke who was born only a doen years after the birth of Lord Byron, and had reached manhood when Byion indulged himself in laudation of forest lite, and of Danie) Boone, w hom the oet con sidered as furnishing tiie most striking illustration of his theory that the woods form the choicest home for men. "The case in point I cite i, Boone lived hunting up to ninety,'' eings the author of ' lon Juan. When these words were first published there were a nuna'ie' of young men living whose histories were to serve a illustrations of the fact that long life is quite as compatible with surrounding of the highest forms of civilization as with life in the forest, to 8 y the least. The future German Emperor Wilhelm was one of these ; George Bancroft was another, Gladstone was an other, and Von Moltke was an other. All these men were work ers in the highest grades of civilised employment; intellectual labors which tried their temper to the last degree, and three of them have lived in'.o the tenth decade of their lives, while ihe solitary survivor of the group, perhaps the most persistent worker of all of them, Mr. Gladstone, bids fair to rival the other in the number of his days. In the meantime Byron's poems have become a part of ancient literature; thi Napole onic wars, which were con tern por aneous with the youth of William, of Moltke and Bancroft, have come to be regarded as a part of ancient history, and the great forests that Boone loved have disappeared before the forward movement of a civilization which loved them not, but which gives every indication of being better fitted for the en vironment of the man of the time, than are the forests, that it dis places. The groves mi.y have been God's first temples; they were pretty certain man's first abiding place; but it may be doubted whether they were ever more conductive to heulthfulness than were the houses, and even the palaces, of civilization. Moltke was a graduate of a mili tary school at eighteen, and never thereafter ceased to be a student of military snbjects as well as a practical worker. As with Holmes' famous "shay," there never was any fault in the machinery of this remarkable man, physically or in tellectually, and his final collapsc was also much like that of a vehicle which "ran a hundred years, to a day," and then so sud denly and mysteriously disap peared from the eyes of men. n the last day of his life the general attended the session of the im perial parliament for that day, and afterward he was suddenly dead. From heart failure the physicians fcaid as they are apt to say in cases of collapse, but it isuite as proba ble that in the veteran's well balanced physique the whole gave way together, l'robahly no other geueial ever did the amount of work in his profession that was done by this man ; certainly none was eer more fortunate in such a number of enterprises, and none ever passed from life into death in a maimer mne apparently desira ble. Uncounted millions of thej Jiunian race have died since Moltke was born, but his term of life has demonstrated that civilization has not yet begun to retrograde as re gards the temporal and terrestrial welfare ot man, at any rate. Thk action among some of the leading republican party leaders, it is said, points to an effort to supplant Harrison with some other person in the next presidential race, in event that Blaine refuses to run. In all probability Blaine will refuse the nomination. At least that seems to be the trend of the political indicator at present. In that event these gentlemen who are high in party control wish to procure, it is said, the nomina tion of Gen. Alger. Such an action would be very unwise. Gen. Harrison is making a record second to none in the conduct of the office of president and he should receive the re-nomination without a dissenting voice. Ho is not only earning it as a matter of right, but as a matter of policy and sound judgment in party poli tics he should receive it. The trials and perils of the cen sus enumerator are many and often ludicrous, but these does not appear to he any funny side to the experi ence of the Manitobia enumerator who got lost in the wilds and had to live upon roots and tin flesh of his faithful horse which he sacri ficed for the purpose of keeping life in his own body, lie finally found his way out of the wilder ness, before starvation took place.
