They all take the yame route however, which is oi- herved in the new Australian fed tration. Tlie New York Tribune says that it is curious to observe bow hi.-tory is repeating itself in the federation of the Australian colonies. The very questions and all of them hich arose in this country alter the revolutionary war were debated for a series of Years and finally settled by the adoption of the American constution, have arisen in Australia, have excited the same kind of diriiHson on precisely the same lines, and are now determined by a plan of fed crating, which, principle for prin ciple if not for word is wonderfully like the plan p-irsued here. Tlie parallel is the more striking in that there lias been in Australia as there was here, an intermediary stage of loose confederation. Oi all the compliments w hich a cen tuiy of admiration has lavished on the great instrument provided by the founders of our government, none is so striking or agreeable as the event which has just been ac complished in the island-continent oi the antipodes. It is a fair sum niary of the scheme adopted at Sidney to say that it is a copy of our constitution in so far as that was jKjssible and could be rendered consistent with the existence of the I'.ritish tie. An executive tlrcted by tlie people was ui course not to be contemplated so long as the condition of dependency re mained, and that which is ex pel i mental in the Australian plan re' lates to tlie attempt it makes to associate the executive and legis lative functions in a body com posed after the form of the Ameri can congress. For the parliament of the new Australian common wealth is modeled in all its func tions upon the American plan. Facts In the line of better and more perfect fanning operations, leaiii:i' on to a larger remunera tion are of great interest. The facts derived from the study of soil absorption at the l'urdtie Fniver- siiy agricultural experiment sta tion, Lafayette, Ind., lead to the same conclusion as the results o! the latest experiments on the use oi fertilizers. that, in a system oi farming having in view large crops and permanent im provement oi the land, phosphoris acid and potash shou'd be used in considerably greater amounts than the crops required, while nitrogen compounds should be used in amounts not greatly in excess of the needs oi the crop. Tim theories do not seem to pan out well when put into practice. It is said that one of the jieculiar results of the recent attempt in co operative housekeeping in Kvan ston, 111., is the boycotting of the families that tried to realize Hel lainy'd ideal. When the experi ment of a community kitchen proved a failure the forty families that engaged in it began to hunt lor cooks. To their dismay thrv found that the servants they dis charged two months before estab lished a boycott agaiu.it them. In se viral cases cooks had it lie im ported from other cities. It was a sad experience, showing how ill theory works in practice and how small is the boasted liberty oi the employer in this country. " Is the recent a Ivance in wheat in, the San Francisco market, sev eral parties have cleared immense fortunes, ranged from :.'."0,!KK) to $oX),n00. If these amounts had been approporiioned among the prod .leers of the country, it would have done an immense amount of good, but as it is it only goes into i the speculators hands, making the rich richer, but brings iu ao relief to the ioor man. The conviction anj sentence of Hu mason, from Sjxkane Falls for cattlejstealini;, seems to have been acase of revenge against an inno cent man, as his reputation haa been above reproach where he has been in business. He was in the butcher business and the worse that can be said was that he pur chased cattle t:iat had been stolen, but that he was not aware of the fact. Tlie jury wanted some one punished, and so convicted Iliim- ason on general principles. I r is said that the city of London grows at the rate of !H)0 human every, week, New York and Chi cago are running active races in the line of getting ahead of the largest city in the world and may possibly succeed in the next cen turv. Tine republican league conven tion meeting in Cincinnati brings forth a burst of enthusiasm, that shows that the party is full of life and vigor. The standard bearer is plainly James (i. Blaine. They Are In It.
