Few however inuiine 1 lie lull jiower liiil li n in tde moving' water. Justice FifM of the I. S. su preme court, at a dinner party in Washington recently, made aonie statements in reference to it. w hich created some doubt in the minds of listeners, and he felt e al ltd upon to corroborate them. :tnd in fo doing brings to light come interesting data. Justice Field, giving ex-Senatoi Foir, of Nevada as auihorily. stated that under a vertical pres sure of HK) or L'lK) feet, the lon e ol the stream is sometimes so great as' to hurl away or hold boulders weighing a thousand pounds; and that it would lie no more possible to cut through such a stream with a crowbar or an ax, where it issued from the nozzle, than to sever eight inches of sold iron with a penknife. The distinguished guests wero incredulous, and Jus tice Fied promised to collect evi dence in support of his statements that would satisfy the doubters. He has done so, and the New York Sun lias had the opportunity ol collating some ol the wonders of practical hydraulics gathered by Justice Field. We think they will astonish the general reader w ho bus paid little attention to this branch of mechanics. .Mr. Louis (Mass, ior sixteen years the super intendent of the Spring Valley mine, assures Justice Field that he has seen an eiuht-inch stream, un der 311 feet of vertical pressure, move in a sluggish way a two-ton boulder at a distance of twenty feet from the nozzle; and that the same stream striking a rock of "00 pounds would throw it .19 a man would throw a twenty-pound weight. "No man that ever lived," adds Mr. Louis (ilass, "could strike a bar through one of these streams within twenty feet of discharge ; and a human being struck by such a stream woind be killed pounded into a shapeless mass." Mr. Augustus J. Howie, of San Francisco, the author of a standard book on hydraulic min ing, estimates that the stream from a six-inch nozle, under --" feet vertical pressure, delivers a blow of 583,735 foot pounds every second, equivalent to 1,070 horse power. "It is absolutely impossi ble," says Mr. Howie, "to cut such a stream w itli an ax or to make on impression on it w ith any other implement." Mr. Howie adds that, although never to his knowledge has a man been struck by such a stream as it comes from the pipe, several accidents have occurred where miners were killed by very much smaller streams at distances of 150 or '1M feet from the nozzle. Tii eke an some hm.i..ui it it's that crop nj in the matter of tu.it.' ami immigration eunsulorations, ne of which the Kconou.ist rtlVis to in the fart that KiiHmIi emigra tion returns for February of this yearshow an increa;t,l iiuimgr.tl ion to this country anil a .ierrean; in .those going to AuHtralia and the CaK? of Gotul Hope, as com pared with the returns of IS!) vi.f an increase of !tH)4 in the numljer of this country anil a decrease of to Australia ami South Africa. It is a little hit strange that there bhouUl he so many utMitional "monopolists' btarting out from that free tr&de country to enjoy the comforts the McKiniey Lull is haul to confer on that clans; ami for the past ten years the Lritiub Islands have been tui uishing us on the average about 1V,imk) such monopolists. The insane desire to aopiiie locations on land that has been withheld from makct for any reason, until a mania has been develope I for its possession, is very peculiar, and is not always backed with even the slightest degree of common sense. The Oklahoma mama was an example of this kind, and another similar rush is on hand in Wisconsin, of w hich the Chronicle says that the men ivho are eager to locate on the Omaha Indian lands in Wis consin do not propose to be trilled with. They are reported to be heavily armed and they threaten death to any one who breaks the lines of waiting applicants. If they prove a nuisance the lire department of Ashland should be called out and the usual ptoeednre in case of a con (Ligation carried out. The most enthusiastic boo nor would not stand a stream from a a steam Cue engine. We on this genial sunset slope, with the mountains on one side and ihe warm breath of tho Pa cific blowing upon us, have little idea of the misery pneumonia and and the dreaded grippe now en tail in Kastern and .Mississippi valley titles. In towns of 8,000 and 10,000 people, 700 and S00 people are Fullering from that miserable malady, and the fatality is something awful. It looks now as if the presi dential race in 1802 might be be tween the old rivals I'.laine and Cleveland. IVnuoyer of Oie'on is not heard of on the democratic side, and will probably not even reach a place in the race fur the vice-presidency.
