Arrives Departs r8ciiicer Knight .. .. ll.Vlpiu li-'Opin .... 3. lopin 7.40 a ui the fieu esi.ai:;ix; It is a satisfaction to know that the legitimate field of lalx.r for women is beinj constantly en larged by an riiligliteue.l i 1 1 I i- oinion. Tlie ineilii-ul jnolVr-tfioii lias reeeivetl many lady practi tioners, lint the Minneapolis Tiiiie. i i discnss'iiig this subject says that for some time past women have in other count ns enjoyed facilities for extended instructiou in medicine not obtainable beie Ktiropeans have been U ss troubled t!ian we with the ipiestion of tin co-education of women and iiil-ii in various branches of the medica art. The Talis facu'.ty, for ex- ample, lias since ISSti thrown open its class-rooms, dissecting-rooms. hospitals, and laboratories with out distinction to women and men alike. In Switzerland there art four medical schools at which women pursue the usual courses of study side by side with men The same thin" is true of the med ical schools of Belgium, l'enniark. Italy, Norw ay and Sweden. In a!l these countries for years past women have found it practicable to net the same instruction as men, and under identical condi tions. In some parts of tlii.3 coun try, particularly in the Western states, like facilities exi.-it, but on a limited scale. There ate now, in fact, thirty-eiht medical sclunils in this country open to both sexes The function of the John llo;in: Medical School will be to lead in this field by providing larger l in! better facilities than are t be found elsewhere this side of tin Atlantic, and by maintaining a high standard of aU-iinmcnt Women physicians w ill undoubted lv, if well educated, have advan tages over men in certain special lines of medical practice. Their sex will secure to them lucrative medical apointmcnts for which they will bt: readily conceded to be bitter tpialilied than men. Woman's ipiick wit, her manual deftness, and. most of all, her warm and ready sympathy, wil! cause her to be preferred to man by many patients, particularly by women. It lias been questioned whether women have the sell ciiiiiinaiid ami mechanical apti t tde that will tit them to be skill fid surgeons. The answer is that already a iiuiiiIk r of women have distinguisbed themselves by the knowledge, cixlness, and success with which they have performed difficult operations. Training wil! accomplish wonders. What we have to contemplate in the well educated women phyoiciau of the future is not the the susceptibility of a namby-pamby miss, but the disciplined intellect, schooled will, steady nerve, and skilled hand of a person who lias ppent years of arduous study and training in ac quiring these invaluable trails. Tin: Knglish peerage ihr not seem to be deserving of thr title of temperance men. It is said that a I'lue-book issued by the liritish g iverninent discloses the fact that 15' peers of the realm are the owners of places in which intoxi cating drinks are sold. The num ber of "drink shops'' owned by these peers is l,"il!. The list is headed by the Karl of I'erby, who is the owner of 7- drinking places. Next comes the Iuko of T.edl'or.l with 4S "drink shops" to his credit. Then come the liuke of llevonshire with 47. followed by the Far! of Cawdor with the I Hike of Uutland with the Karl of Dudley w ith :;.", the I hike oi Northumberland with :M, and the Duke of Portland U Tnv: neinv umiilii'i-ii-j Hint un made to harrow up the nerves of j timid people, over the destruction i of jiortions or all of the earth, that ; periodically come to the front, are ! wonderful to behold. IJccently, il. . is said a Valo military iiiHlrncbtr, j it seems, has concentrated his mathematical intellect on the prophecy of Joshua, and has figured out that the end of the world will come in IS'.".), lie will not excite any more fear than the Dooinsealers did, for he is not the first clever man who has gone daft on this subject. The twentieth century will come, but there is little hope that it will throw any light on the IJiblical prophecies. Probably a hundred years from now men will be nuzzling over the end of the world just as they are to-day, and will be making piedic lions as to when the remnant of the human race will be donning angel vesture in the twinkling of an eye, but all the same the old world will continue to wag as usual. The tin Ileitis of New South Wales were not opened until 1S7-, but since that date tin and tin ore to the value of nearly H"MH0,000 has been taken from them and shipped from the colony. The ore has come mainly from alluvial leosits, but huge stanniferous dikes intersecting the granite country rock, which give much promise, have recently been dis coveied. Six IIe!e la Montana young ladies took an ell'ective way of stopping t he tongue of the slanderer. They went together to the barber shop here the young man worked, and four watched and hindered the escape of the tradticer while the two be had talked about applied horsewhips effectually. The vic tim of their righteous wrath has retired from sight until nature shall have healed his contusions. Furniture In Otiuiitltie.
