The case of William Ollet, a coloied man now serving a fifteen -yeat sentence in the Uhiostate peniten tiary here, on conviction of a crim inal attack on a woman, is almost withodt a parallel, as now. after serving two years and four months, evidence is produced proving him to bean innocent man. uifct's al leged victim was the wife ofJ.F. I'nderwood, a white clergyman of Klyria, and a man of good char acter. Mrs. Underwood had the co.ilidence of her hiisb.m 1 and the respect of her acquaintances. When a preacher returned from a lecturing tour his wife related a wofid tale. She said one day during his absence, as she walked along the street, Ollet, with her permission, assisted her to carry some bundles. Arriving at her home, she said h ) had assaulted her, but she had fought him otl with a club, lie, however, Iina'lv overcome her, rendered her un conscious by the use of chlorifortu, and escaped. A few days later Mrs. underwood pointed (Met out on the street to her husband, w ho would have killed lorn then and there but for the intervention ol a third party. Ollet was arrested and Mrs. Underwood gave the story of the outrage befoie the Krand jury. As she emerged from the grand jury room she was ob served to be weeping. She then urged her husband l drop the piosecution, as she felt pity for Hi accused. Ollet was covieted. however, and sent to tiie penitentiary for l." years. Some months afterward Underwood be came very ill, and his life was de spaired of. One day, while at his bedside, his wife said she had a confession to make before he died. Then with much weeping she told how Ollet had accompanied her home, how she had sent the chil dren away, and how Ollet, with her full and free consent, had been unlawfully intimate with her, and how he had come to the house at subsequent times. She ascribed her fall to a temptation too great to be resisted. Underwood recov ered, and a separation ensued by mutual consent, he taking the children and removing to Alle ghany City, where he still resides. Mrs. Underwood subsequently ob tained a divorce on (he grounds of wilful absence. Underwood then made allidavit to the confession of his wife and sent it to Ollet's friends in Elyria, who sent it to the prison board, before whom the prisoner was yeeterday called and continued the truth of the con fession. Ten thous and striking weavers assembled at IJrai.ford to-day to protest against the action of the m micipal author ities in forbidding the meeting which the strikers had arranged for yesteiday. The police vainly tried to disperse the gathering. Finally tl.e riot act was read and the military summoned. The sol diers joined the forces with the po lice and a combined charge wa made upon the ranks of the stub born striker. A fierce struggle ensued, but the strikers were una ble to resi-t the increased force and were compelled to retreat le lore bayonets and batons. A train collision occurred at 10 to night at Stai biK-k, resulting in the destruction of an engine and two cars. The freight train, east bound, was standing at Starbuck 1-Apot w hen it was crashed into by a runaway engine, to which were attached two cars and a caboose. I'he runaway engine crashed into the other, tearing out the Avliole front of the engine, which ex- loded, setting hre to the cars at tached, which were totally con sumed. When the calnjose was burning it was with the greatest ditti- culty that the Starbuck hotel was prevented from burning down.
