That was the question asked many times yesterday. The bridge was the chief topic of discussion ill this city yester day. After the petition, which has been before the city council, asking the city to purchase the ferry, was "published in the Humi.ii, the question was the general theme of conversation. Men could be seen in little groups 3ii every street corner talking alsiut it, Mid it was discussed in ollices, in homes, and by shoppers and merchants across tbecoiinters. There was but one sentiment on the question of building the bridge this summer all demand it, but on the question of the city pur chasing the ferry for $JU00, fiosses siou to be given on completion cf the bridge, the opinion was divided. All sorts of ideas were freely expressed. Kumois were heard of dark and diabolical plots about (lie selection of the bridge site and the proposed purchase of the ferry, until one could almost imagine a New Orleans Mafia society was in full blast here. All tiiis was over a matter that is not new. Similar scenes were enacted in Portland and Salem, when the time had come for build ing a bridge. The ferry owners and a good many cilixens there, as in Albany now, contended thai their projierty could noi be de stroyed by an improvt merit for public use, without compensation, and other citizens contend tint they ought not to have to pay for the right to build a free wagon bridge, and so a merry war went on, and in Portland", especially, injunction siiils ami legal en tanglements followed for two years befoie the matter was linallv adjudicated. In Salem also there was similar trouble and the citizens there bought the ferry. There is no occasion for any un due excitement over the question, ('aim judgment, can accomplish the end sought much quicker than a bitter struggle. As the matter now stamJs the city council, it is said, will vote against the puichasc of the ferry by the city, and should they do so, the payment would no doubt be stopped by an injunction suit on the grounds that such act ion would be illegal ; but it is not unlikely that the ferry will be purchased by the citizens. The building of the bridge, how ever, must not be considered as depending upon the purchase ol the ferry. The owners of the ferry are old residents of Albany an! with evei v other cilizen recogni.e the necessity for a bridge. They simply ask thai they be paid about one-third of what the ferry cost them. This is a question for the people ami the ferry company to settle, but in its settlement there must be no onsiderations that will prevent the building of the bridge this summer. The people demand this, and will not. tolerate anv action calculated to defeat it. Public sentiment when aroused, as it is in Albany in favor of a bridge this summer, will brook no defeat, and is as dangerous to monkev w ith as a buz saw. THE TEACHERS. tute at the Opera House.
