Ii'l'iu 7 4f a m Thk silver iueation, allliougli it is shelved for tlie present by the failure of congressional action, is still alive anil active issue, that must he met ly the country ami rightly solve'.!. If we arc to hi ve silver money then it shouhl lie given a value as firm and lawful in projoi tion to its establisheil weight ami purity as is accorded to gold, and this axiomatic state of affairs can only be accomplished by making its coinage just as free as is that of gold. That is all there is in the subject, and the argu ments and fine spun theories that are made to the contrary are but specious falsehoods made with Belli nil interests intent. The Chronicle sizes up one idea uon the subject as follows : "The ma jority of the coinage committer- of the house have a very restricted idea of the silver question. In their reiiort tlu-v say : "I'nder the present law there is provision for using the world's surplus (of silver), which is all that unlimited coinage could accomplish." The dense iitnorance of the ' men w ho assume that the object of the ad vocates of bimetallism is to secure a market for the surplu produc tion of silver is only mati lied by the stupidity of those jcoplc w ho charge that the friends of free coinage ate working in the in terest of the silver miners. An elementary knowledge of the principles of bimetallidui would teach any one that the object of free coinage is not to make a mar ket for silver miners, but to secure a standard of value more stable than the single nold standard could possibly Ik?. T.y permitting . free coinage the double standard would at once Iks established and become the measure of value. This would arrest the fall of prices due to "the diminution of the standard by the demonetization of silver, and prevent every persou called upon to make a payment at some future day from being de frauded by his creditor who, so long as the single gold standard remains in force, will lc able to compel payment in a metal whirl la constantly In-coming more scarce," The weight given to'.-irjnmstan-tial evidence is often wrongly ap plied. The Chronicle illustrates this by the case ol the college professor whose disappeara ice was finally accounted for by the (hiding of his dead body. It says that the clearing up of the mystery of the disappearance of 1'rofessor Bancroft of l'.rown University shows how easily dates ami inci dents may !c confused by persons of fairly good memory. At tin time the professor suddenly droppeil out of life one of the theories was Lhat he had clandes tinely left home for some foreign country, an leo'or was given to t hit theory by the testimony of sevt ral jersons who claimed to have seen him in Providence the day after he left. Now- it is ccrUiu that he threw himself into a pond a lew hours alter he walked out of his own door. It is such errors in recollection as these which make circumstantial evidence so dangerous. The dispatches continue . to bring accounts of tin work of the Whitecap fiends, in various locali ties in the east. In one instance they violently w rest a new ly made bridegroom from the arms of bis pleading wife; in another they tear the sleeping forms of a husband and wife from their bed and after heating them set them adiif' upon the raging waters of the Ohio river at midnight. These pretending conservers of the public morals are the worst enemies society has and the power of law and order in the states where they ojierate should I e worked to the fullest extent to put a stop to their in famous work. Xo matter what the character of the victims of their midnight raids may be the actions of the devils who hide be hind white masks is ten times more dangerous and contemptible. TiiKendurance of the Cve men in the mine disaster, in Pennsyl vania, wl.o clung to life with a tenacity and perseverance that gave them existence through five days in the noisome atmosphere of tie dismal mine without food, is an example worthy of all praise and commendation, and a hundred times more deserving of mention than the puny ell'orts of lr.. Tan ner and Sncci to gain notoriety by pinching their stomachs. The Washington bouse of repre sentatives, in the trial and ac quittal of Metcalfe, the member who reported having accepted a brilie from Judge Calkins for voting for him for. Thk law makers of the slate of Kansas, are passing railroad legis latioiUd the most stringent nature. A inasimun rate bill has leen passed which reduces freight, It is said, 2i) per cent. This can be counted as the direct result of the abitrary action on the pait of the railroads themselves. I'y refusing to acquiesce in the reasonable de mandd of the eopIe, they have caused such a reaction that the matter has swung to the other extreme, and now the railroads are to be unduly cinched. One sided legislation is all w rong but th! railroad jeople have had it so long on their side that they cau not grumble much if it vibrates over to the other extreme. 230 - Do Not Pass Bv !
