For institnce it is stil that the hunt fur bacteria goes on apace, an J the present outlook is that nrvoiia people w ill he frightened to death, even ii the bacteria themselves don't kill them. A specialist at Bullalo, lr. Howe, has been investigating the condition of the roller towels lined in the schools of that city, and tinds that a Bimare foot of theaver age towel contains from thirty-live to fifty million bacteria. In ca.ue the mere statement of nulnhcrs is not Biitticiently alarming, it may be mentioned that anion-; these bacteria were the germs of various contagious diseases. The investi gation was conducted primarily with a view to finding the sources of contagion in certain diseases of the eye, and that these particular bacteria were included in the fifty millions was shown by the eyes of a rabbit which had been inoculated with wushyngs from the towels. Tux growth and power obtained by the Standard Oil trust, is cer tainly phenomiual in its extent, and there teems to be no prospec tive limit to its extension, as it is constantly augmenting its hold ings. Quite recently it extended its real estate possessions in a most remarkable manner, acquiring oil lands b the county as it were in Pennsylvania, Ohio, West Vir ginia and other s'ates, and, oJ course, will use its increased pro ductive po.ver to exhi.rt higher prices from consumers. This is one of the trusts that free traders rarely refer to", as they could hard ly make a point against piotection by duelling on the fact that the oil trust, which is absolutely un protected, is the most tloiirishing atl'air of the kind in the world. Thk co-oerative colony of ToKIobampo, in the Lower Cali fornia peninsular, over which t here has been so much talk, and in which there baa been apparently so much genuine guttering, il st-cnit has made a success of one thin;,', and that is the temperance uc.-- lion in a practical manner. I.iiiioi is pol.l only in quantity to adults, and when a mcmlier abuses the use of any liipior, w hether pur chased or given, the name of the nttender is published and every one is warned against supplying him with any intoxicant. In this way theio is no bar placed upon the free use of i'ujiiors, w lli-atlh Blile time the person who drinks to excess finds he is Absolutely cut oil" from intoxicants. Ir is a significant fact, ami one that intending settlers and home seekers will do well to note, that w hile the people to the east and south of us. eyen in the favored liuie of California, are experienc ing destructive lloo.lrf, snow and all the vigors of winter, the Willam ette Valley is basking in sunshine, and thrifty housewives aie already lightly turning their fancy to thoughts of spring onions and other early garden-planting. Nkw York wants a monument e red ted to the memory of lien. Sherman. The next thing we hear of probably will be an appeal to to the old soldiers w idows and orphans to make penny contribu tions for the pur)ae of erecting said monument to add t the at tractions of the city oi Xew York. It will materialize sometime suh eopient to theGiant monument in all probability. Tiikke should be no unnecessary delay in lreginning the work of building the bridge. There is considerable preliminary work to be done and if1 should be com menced at once. A Yorso man in Kansas recently tested the truth of the aphorism that the constant dropping of water will wear out the hardest stone. lie wagered that he could stand the dropping of a quart' of water upon his open palm, drop by drop, from a distance of three feet. Bnt before 500 drop9 of the water had fallen his hand was blistered an J he gave up, not being able to stand the excruciating pain. His nerves could not bear the strain even if his muscles Ctlld. The average hotel runner makes a nuisances of himself generally, especially in the large cities. To such an extent has this grow n to be the case in San Francisco that their suppression is called for. They recently brutally maltreated an old lady who airrved in thai city front Seattle. Any person who ever lauded in that city w ill have a vivid remembrance oi that class of individuals. If Albany is going to have a bridge this euuimer the work must be commenced without delay. Hither the city council or the citi zens should go aliont it immedi ately. The site is to be selected, a county appropriation secured, the plans and kind of bridge determined. All this will require time and it ought to be commenced at once. ' The widow of tien. Barrurulia, has brought suit againtt the United States government, for the death of her husband t who was killed on lioard a United States vessel by thellautemalan officials. Her claim w ill probably be on tile for a grei tmany years. Til K WOltl.l) KNKIC1I Kl.
