Arrives Departs raasMurer. tll.13vmjl2.20pm 3.40puii7.45ain Ficlttht The report of the American Iron and Steel Association shows that the pig iron production in I8!K) was 10,307,028 net tons of 2000 pounds, an increase of 21 per cent over the preceding year. This output ex ceeded that of Great Britain by 1,200,000 gross tons of 2240 pounds and was 600,000 tons greater than her production in 1882, the largest on record. If the phenomenal demand for iron is considered, and the fact that prices have steadily diminished in the face of it, the free trader must admit that the claim of the protectionist that the creation of a great domestic in dustry is a vast benefit is absolute ly sound. Suppose that we had remained stationary in the matter of iron production, as we did dur ing the fourteen years prior to the adoption of the protective policy, does any one imagine that the un paralleled demand for structal iron would have arisen, and if it had is any one insane enough to imagine that we would not have leen obliged to pay enormously for our supplies if we had remained de pendent upon England, as we necessarily must have done had we not put on a heavy protective duty? The answer to these ques tions ie found in the tables of pro duction during the period preced ing and following protection and the price lists of both periods, ami they show distinctly that the fail ure to develop our own iron in dustry prior to 18M0 caused us to pay England enormous prices, while since that period, by pro moting domestic production, we have greatly reduced prices and made the use of iron liosBiMe in hundreds of directions never dreamed of before. (Among the many curious cus touts that a close observance of "nature's laws has brought into use, perhaps the following, told by the Medical Record, is the most peculiar: The grip of an ant's jaw is retained evfn after . the body has been bitten ofl' and nothing but the head remains. This know ledge is possessed by a certain tribe of Indians in Brazil, .who put the ants to a very peculiar use. When an Indian gets a gash cut in his hand, instead of having his hand sewed together, as physicians do in this country, ho procures five or six large black ants, and, holding their heads near the gash, they bring their jaws to gether in biting the flesh, and thus pull the two sides of the gash to gether. Then the Indian pinches off the bodies cf the ants, and leaves their heads clinging to the gash, phich is held together until the gash is perfectly healed. It is to be hoped that the large fortune which Mist? Catharine Drexel will devote to the education of the. Indian and the negro will be wisely managed. Several millions have already been spent on the education of each of these races, but the result, especially in theiaseof the Indian, is not en couraging. No training will be of any avail for the young Indian so long as he is returned to the agency and to his old savage life when his studies are finished. If any of Miss Drexel'a millions are applied to teaching the Indian how to farm and to be self-supporting her name will rank high among those who have tried to solve the Indian problem. The aligators thtt used to swarm in tne bayous of the (iulf States, are becoming extinct and in a few years it is said will cease to exist. As soon as a commercial valne was placed upon their hides and carcasses, the war of cxtermi- nation commenced. Well let the ugly brutes go, and if several other species of wild animals that are at times dugerousto man should go the same road there would be no cause for regret. Tue report of Select Committee on Immigration and Naturaliza tion makes a rather formidable looking volume, but the magnitude of the interests involve fully justify the most exhaustive inquiry. The statistics which accompany the report show very plainly that our moral, social, and industrial pro gress is being seriously retarded by the thrusting upon us, through various agencies, of large numbers of fo.eigneers who are wholly unfit for American citizenship. It is not enough that our laws should guard against ths coming of the. pauper and criminal classes. The committee recagnize this fact and seek to apply a remedy. It is not the intent to restrict immigration, but to sift it to separate the desirable from the undesirable im migrants and permit only the landing of those who have the re quisite moral and physical quali ties. The committee regard the time as far in the future when the country will suffer from an over crowded population, hence they can not recommend so radical a regulation as consular inspection or educational examination. The report says: "It will be fifty years before statesmanship need appre hend a burden from the influx of desirable aliens, but the time now is, and always will be, when the undesirable should be prohibited a landing in our country." The amendments recommended by the committee to the general laws are ; the exclusion of any person likely to become a public charge; any one suffering from a loathsome disease; a polygamist, and any person whose passage has been paid by another, or who is assisted to come, and who can not show clearly and satisfactorily that he does not lelong to any of the pro hibited classes. The position taken by Mr. Cleveland upon the silver ques tion, as shown in his letter to the Cooper meeting in New Yotk, re ceives various comments. Repre sentative Bynum, of Indiana, be ing asked by a reporter what effect the letter would have, replied "It is a long time belore the next democratic convention." Just so, and in the meantime the demo cratic managers will hope that Cleveland's utterances will fade front public recollection in the south and west, while the fact that he is a goldbug will beindustrious ly used to assist him in New York and New Knglund. It looks very much as though Pameli had pcored another point against the men in his party who desired to force him out of the leadership. Certainly O'Brien has lost ground by his ludicrous manifesto, that lays him open to attack by its strained language and its abuse of adjectives. Teacher KiamitiHlimi.
