The results of the talk of the Indian chiefs gathered at Wash iiigton, does not apparently hear out the complaints agaiiiHt tho in itial! agents, in reganl to sw indling the Slonx out of their rations. Had anything of the kind oc curred we may be pure that the Sioux chiefs would not have leen . at all backward in telling it to the commissioner, and yet no such complaint appears to have been made. White Ghost complained of the encroachment of the w hites upon the land of the Indians and of the sinallness of the rations of cotlee and bacin. Big Mane did not like the small size of the bet-f cattle furnished. Sad Bear said that what his people wanted was more reservation schools. All agreed that they did not want military agents, which is an answer to the charges against the civil agents. As the Chronicle says what the Sioux really want is all that they can eat and then perfect liberty to go where they please. In this they are not unlike many people whose skins are of a lighter hue. There are many of our own fellow citizens who like to get oil' the reservation and have ghost dances and then be taken back and fed and pampered. Unman nature is very much the same, whether among white menorSioux Indians. A stcdv of the sources of out foreign iiuniigraton, shows that .the increase comes from localities that altound iu the greatest illiter acy, and consennently the least desirable eU-ment to bring into this country. Bradstreet stilus up that during lS'.H) the total number of immigrants arriving in the I'nited States from foreign coun tries was I! !,:.';, a gain over the preceding year of tlo.WM), or 1 j per cent. The bulk of the increase was found in arrivals from three countries in central and southern K 1 1 rope A u at i ia-1 1 11 nga ry , 1 'o land, Italy and, iu fact, these three countries may !e credited alone with supplying more than tho entire increase noted, a? their total gain over lsS'. was '.'.i,0(H)f or X.ik'iO more than the total net gain. The arrivals of British immigrants showed a heavy falling oil', (iei mun arrivals gained slightly, and Russian immigrants were also numerous than in 1SS!. Tiif. Age of Steel thinks that tho trust record thus fur in 1S!1 sIioas that the "balance of trade'" is be ginning to turn in lavor of the public, as against monopdy. At the same time it must be admitted that the "combination" disease is by no means cured. It keeps breaking out in fresh spots at irregular intervals. For iustauce, the leading oat meal manufacturers are even now busy with the forma tion of the $3,000,000 American Cereal Company; the threshing machinery manufacturers are try ing to get together in an incorpor ated organization ; the new Oak Harness Tanners' Association hopes to survive as a price-fixer; steel rail manufacture is gridually getting into stronger hands ; and finally, Mew England's spool bobbin and shuttle industry is not unlikely to pass into the control of an English syndicate with a capi tal of $5,000,000. Tub death of admiral l'orter removes one of the nation's famous naval ollicers who has rendered distinguished services to his country. His funeral will be at tended with the highest military and civil honors. The Jewish citizen of Portland are taking active steps toward as sisting the persecuted Jews in Russia. A fund is being raised for this purpose. The Oregon legislature will terminate its lalwrs this wick. The fashion of berating the leg islative assembly, and of railing at the legislators as a set of incom petent spendthrift idle villians, has grown into common use, and the far larger fchare of the news papers of the state are indulging in the pastime to a large extent. The facts of the business is that the legislators work industriously and as consistently as is possible, considering the difficulties that surround their task. The present legislature is really doing a large amount of meritoiims labor, and future events will demonstrate that fact. If the assessment law passed by the house Incomes a law, even if it is imperfect, it will represent a vast amount of labor, and will accomplish much good. Many other meritorious bills have been worked up, and the nlt:m.ite verdict will be that the '01 legislature was an industrious and capable one. Cleveland's silver tongue has got him into trouble. The demo crats who favor fiee coinage bitter ly denounce his anti-silver senti ments, and his imprudent speech may defeat his nomination. The democrats on the other hand are afraid if he is nominated his hos tility to the coinage measure will cause his defeat at the polls, which is a sensible conclusion. The system of public improve ments authorized by the amended charter should be set on foot as soon as jossible this season. The bridge acros3 the AVillaniet.e is the first an I foremost on the list of improvements. The Portland consolidation bill should be passed by the Oregon legislature. A big city embracing the suburbs which naturally lie long to Portland would do much towartl making Oregon's proud metropolis the great mart she should be. Teachers Examination.
