The woodbox in one of the pas senger coacht'S of the south bound Roseburg mail caught lire at this city yesterday. The tlames were extinguished before headway was gained, and the only damage was charring the box a little. A peculiarity about the ' lS'.H'' is that adding the first figure to the second makes the third, and subtracting the fourth figure from the third gives the second. Add ing the four figures together gives us the number of the century. The police of this city are on the lookout for a tramp who had stolen two shot-guns near Cor vallis. He came to this city with tl e stolen property, but left sud denly, going into the country and carrying the two guns as if he ex pected an Indian outbreak. C. A. Carey, a steamboat man of experience, wants Salem business men or cannery men to assist bun in building and equipping a light draft steamer to run fom Salem to the head of navigation. Thy boat would be about thirty tons capac ity, and the proposition meets wit't favor generally. The ties and stringers for the new railway bridge across the Mc Kenzie at Coburg have been put in place. The frame work of the bridge is nearly all cut and ready to put together, ami with the -.resent force of twenty-five men the bridge will be ready to swing in about ten days, unless the river should rise so as to binder. There has been more tramps in Corvallis lately than ever before in onr history. They come by twos, fours and half do.ens and petty pilfering is getting common. Something otiidit to le done to stop this and able Imdied men ought to Ih made to earn an honest livelihood. Corvallis Times. A telegram was received yester day by Mr. Charles Pfeiiler from K. J, Barrows at Oakland, Califor nia, stating that Miss Carrie l'l'cif fer, who has been there during the winter for her health, was no bet ter. Burglars entered the residence of W. F. Hendricson last evening while the family was at cl urch. They locked the front door and then proceeded to satisfy them selves with a good square meal. After this the bouse was gone through and a pair of blankets and one of Mr. Ilecdricson's coats taken. One of Mrs. Hendricson's dresspockets was relieved of and it is thought a twenty dollar gold piece went the same way. A lot of notes and wheat receipts were left undisturbed. Some Proposed Improvements Wtich Should Not Be Neglected. Tl'o announcement that the owners of the citv water works are arranging to extend the water mains, so as to supply all parts of the city, will be grateful to the citizens of Albany. Many of the new resiliences, and indeed mat.y others in souns (tortious of the city, are not reached by the water mains, and in the first ward the demand for a water supply has been so great tha: the city council has been petitioned to allow prop erty owners to lay pipes of their own to be supplied by a wind-mill. Win. M. Hong, one of the own ers of the canal, it is nunoiinred, will be in this city to-day to confer with the city council about ex tending the water maim. It. is to be hoped there will be no further delay in this work, as it is a mat ter of public necessity. It will le esecially a necessity in view of the sewer extensions which will be made this season. Arrange ments will no doubt be undo for the ear?y extension of the water i mains. anl it is not iniprouaiiie that some new buildings and other important improvements will be made in thecitv water works. While the subject ia being con sidered some emphatic action should bo taken to prohibit the draining of lateral sewers into the canal from which the water is taken. The health of the city de mands that the practice of drain ing tilth into the water of the omul, which is used in hundreds of families for household and drinking purposes, be summarily stooped. It is an open disgrace and a gross outrage upon water cotisumers that this should be tolerated for a Uay. CALIFORNIA ON WHEELS. The Wondirful Exhibit Visited by Hun ' dr. ds of People io This City. Tue two c irs laden w ith Cali foruiau exhibits, known as "Cali foixia on Wheels,"' was visited ty hundreds cf people in this city yesterday. The cars were side tracked near the Southern Pacific depot. Our sister state has made a splendid exhibit and shows much entcrpri e in sendi::g the cars all over the country, which has provid a novel advert ising scheme. In tfiany respects it is no better thaiiOregon can do. Aside from the Jtropical fruits and vineyard products the display was fine, but was hot more than can be seen at exhibits o: Oregon products, and the grain, such as wheat etc., ran le beat in Oregon. It is a displav that does credit to the State of California and the entire coast. This is the second tour of "Cali fornia on Wheels," the first having beer, over the Central Pacific and on .Fast as far as Boston. The train left San Francisco on Pec. '!, ISStt, has been constantly on the road ever since, traveling over 14, 000 miles of railroad, visiting thirty-two states and territories and-being visited by over million an la hall' people, yet the exhibits are:n perlect order. Tjie train will viait Eugene, Tail sday; Kosebui.';, Friday; and Meoiord and Ashland Satuidiy. It till make nine stops in the leading cities of California, ar riving ot Oakland the 2S:h, inst. Sugar tieet Iiiritiatry. A number of capitalists of Port land are seriously considering the question of inaugurating the busi ness of manufacturing beet sugar in Oregon. The matter was under consideration ty several persons here some fifteen years ago. They mad! all necessary experiments in growing the beets and having them analyzed, and found that the er centage of sacchareni matter in beets grown was very large, being H per cent and in s.ome case more, which is much more than is found in beets grown in (iermany. The parties who made these investiga tions had concluded to form a company and invest $L1M,000 in the beet sugar business, but just then the treaty w ith the Sandwich Is lands admitting their sugar free of dut3' went into ctl'ect, and that knocked the scheme in the head. Now that the McKinley bill pro vides lot a bounty of 1' cents per jhjuihI on all sugar made in this country, the time is favorable for going into the beet sugar husiness anil some of the wealthiest and most enterprising of citizens have the matter under serious considcra tion, The ( niwiler fate, Mr. Solomon Crowder is circui ting a petition in this city, which has been generally signed, testing to the good ciiarcter by P. A. Crowder while in lbany. The latter w ho is his brother is under arrest for impersonating a postal insjiector and obtaining a free pass on a railway in Kansas. It is said there is some spite w ork connected with the charge, which is at most a petty offense, of which the de fendant claims he is innocent having obtained the pass in good faitb. The case has already cost him several good positions. Tues day the I'nited States attorney presented a petition for an orJer of removal which was granted, and Crowder's hail was fixed at $1,H)0. His appearance in the Kansas court iss-et for the second Tuesda) in April, If he fcives bail lie need not hurry away from the state, but if he goes with the officers now, he will not have to pav his traveling or living expenses. THE TEE STREET RAILWAY. A Good Many Thousand Cellars Will Be j Expended on Extending the Lite. One of the directors of the Al bany street railway company suited yesterday to a Hkuai.h re torter "that it is a settled' fact that the street car line w ill be extended this year. Pelinite plana will not be determined until the annual meeting of the stockholders is held, which will take place on the first Wednesday in March. The company has been consider ing the question of converting the line into an electric railway sys tem, but this has not been fully decided upon. Some extensive improvements will be made, ami a circuit of the city will probably be made, which will reach the grow ing suburbs. The road has been paying a i well as was exected when it was built, and the receipts will be largely increased by the extension of the line so as to reach the many new residences of the city. Prop ositions have 1 ecu made by an Kastern electric street railway company t put capital into the exten.von of the road, but whether this is accepted or not. the com pany will spend a good many thousand dollars in this work dur ing the coming su inner. Hast Oregonian. The Capital City Kiilway Com pany ot s-alem is preparu g to change the motive power used for running its dynamos iroin steam to water. It is the intention to use the water wheel that stands just west f the power house and to the south of the bridge on east State street. This wheel was formerly used in driving the ma chinery in the oatmeal mill that burned a lew years ago, and affords power equal to forty-horse. A canard obtained considerable irculation last week, savs the Colville Miner, to elb-ct that Chief Joseph and a band of 100 followers had ilecide'l to camp at Kettle Falls and run the town to suit themselves. The fact is, about a dozen Si.va-hes, containing an over.'i se of conversation water, invaded the quiet little hamlet and lightened somebody. 'L'ne liquor was recured at Marco.-1. Hunting UN Aionev, The Astorian relates how a festive l'ittshurgian lost his wealth in Astoria. It says that William Uosel urj; is a young man, who, when at home, resides in the smoky city of 1'itts'mrg. Justa' present he is in this city and is marveling at the ways of the wick ed, and with the aid of the police is trying to recover $S0O i.i gold coin width was stolen from him Friday night, while he was in a comatose condition ho to speak. Mr. Kos'dmrg arrived in Astoria several days ago as a passenger on the American ship Keaper, an I by the time be gets hack home he will tic able to write a iook. When the young gentlemen left home he wanted excitement, an 1 up to the present time he seems to have la red pretty well in this respect. On the trip around the horn the vessel encountered soma very heavy weather. Several exciting incidents, such as a sailor failing from aloft and being dashed to death, the daring way of a sail or two and huge sens, tumbling on hoard occurred, and it was with a sigh of relief that Mr. Roseburg ttepped ashore there. Friday morning a money advice reached him from home and he drew $S00. fbat evening Mr. Koseburg started out to see Astoria by arc and in candesent light. He got along all right for an hour or two, but after that his memory is a blank until about steen o'clock yesterday morning, when be was found lying in the street near the corner ol First and Benton s'reets by a police man. The officer broke the sleet covering that had formed en the sleeping stranger and woke him up. It took .Mr. Koseburg some minutes to recover his senses, and then he ma le the discovery that his wealth had flown. The last thing the young man remembers was taking a couple of drinks. The iolice are endeavor ing to find who stole the '.noney, but so far w ithout success. TIIK IVIIItM) KNKICIIKO.
