We are pleased that only a few of our voters signid that petition, and we are informed that some of those; who did sign it will be pleased to have, their names taken oil". There are sev eral reasons why this canity tdiould not be divided at present, esjec!a!ly the southern half. It is very probable that that pelilion will never find its way to the legis lature, and even though it should, it would be of no use. If Linn county must lie diviied this year, let the division lie in the northern part. The lto:il. Plaster, of Eugene, for opening a letter belong ing to another, is down on the calender of the United States court in Portland, but when it was called Thursday Judge M:Arthur informed the ourt that, supposing the trial was set for Friday, his client, the defendmt, would not be readv. Plaster was arrested last August for taking a letter from the Eugene office, directed to Win. Preston's low attachment vitli Mi's Brusia Gay I on, of Albany, to whom he was engaged, with the prospect of an early wedding. Plaster evident ly thought it was a good joke, and failed to see the serious turn of atfairs till after his indictment by the United States grand juiy. lie was admitted to bail and will be tried Friday. The arrest and proscution will have a wholesome ell'ect upon prac tical jokers whothink it lots of lun to pry into the secrets of tender relation-hip existing betewen a love-sick swan and his best girl. Suicide at Toledo. On Saturday evening of last week Win. Ilenshaw, 70 years of age, who was living with the fain ily of his son ab.ut two miles from Toledo, committed suicide by shooting hims lf in the left breast with a shotgun loaded with buck shot. The young people had gone out to sjme neighliors to attend a candy nulling and during their ah-ence the rash act was commit ted, and the body was not found until ."o'clock the next dav. Tlie old man had placed the butt of the gun asainst an embankment and the muzzle against his breast nut touched the trigger with a forked stick, and no doubt bill that death was almost instantaneous, the result ot a moat ghastly wound At the coroner s inquest young Mr. Ilenshaw testified that his father attempted taking his own life bv hanging I. iuiself once bsfore and that but a short time ago he asked for strvchnine with which to kill himself. A Brutal Outrage One of the most daUardly out rages ever perpetrated is related in the following clipping: The Bev. John Scllwoo 1, aged S" years, well known in Fast Portland, and who ha resided in Milwaukee for years, was assaulted at his home in Milwaukee Tuesday evening about six o'clock, and robbed. Mr. Sell wood is very feeble and it was only recently that he has been able to get out of the house without assistance. For months past he has been almost an invalid and was wheeled about in a chair. The robbers broke into his room and one held him bv the neck while the other struck him over the head with a revolver. They secured about ten dollars a id left the old m; n lying on the Hour uncon scious." 1'iliiese lU'tfulalorn I toileted. The "regulators" who forced the Chinese, to leave Milton a couple of weeks ago are not to have all the fun to themselves. The rand jury has taken a hand in the affair, and last Saturday Si. Kelley, ''an Sheals, Arthur Pierce, Charles Baitlett and Hugh I loon, who are supposed to have been the leaders of the tiring party, were jointly indicted for assault and battery committed upon the persons of divers ami sur.ilry Chinese. They are all young men and will appear in Pendleton to answer the charges. A Sensible View. The following from the Lebanon Express is a fair minded canded view of the Albany bridge question, and in view of tlie "kick" that is being made in various portions of the county is absolutely refreshing. Albany wants the river bridged at that place, and no one can oiler a single, good reason whv she should not have it. Several expensive bridges have been built in Linn count v to which Albany tax-payers contributed.ar.d a spirit of laiiness demands that we reciprocate, not grudgingly but cheerfully. Another Kailroad. Citizens of Manpiam are agitat- I nig the question of building a branch railroad from that place to Mo int Angle, to connect with the Oregonian Bailway Company. They will petition the legislature for a charter. The distance to be constructed at present is about live miles. The urade on the route proposed is almost level, and a very small outlay would be necessary to build tiie roadbed. licaily for Orriinnry. The East ern Washington insane asylum is prepared for patients, w ith the exception that it has not siillicient water supj.lv. It will take $20,000 to bring water froir. One hundred and iliiity of the -100 inmates at Steilacoom belong to Eastern W asnington, and the former institution is badly overcrowded. COAST NOTES Newsy Items at Keport.eil by Kx changeg. John Stanley, one of Oregon's pioneers, died at HooU river, Feb ruary 1, aged 75 years. He came to Oregon in IS"3, and has resided at Hood river nearly twenty-live years. There are about sixteen hands employed on the norrth jetty. The great est fight on record occurred in Yakima county between aluskin and another Yakima Indian who fought for four iays and four nights without taking a single mouthful to eat. When tired nature would not permit the strife they would fall down and sleep for a few hour only to go at it again. The ba'tle was lcr the possession of a squaw. There is considerable talk in Oregon ovar tlie subject of prose cution of persons for selling or giving liipior to Indians. Any man is at the mercy of an Indian if the Indian has a grudge. An Indian can cause the arrest and transportation to Portland of any one by simply charging that so-and-so has sold or given him liquor. It is almost impossible ior anyone so accused to prove the the Indian's statement to be false, and a defense costs more than the tine, and it appears to be the ac cepted rule to prove guilty, pay the tine and drop the matter as the quickest and less expensive method. Mew Seed H lif.it. The introduction of new seed wheat by farmers in any locality is nearly always followed by good results. The Pendleton East Oregonian no tices efforts in that direction in Umatilla county. It says: More than usual interest is taken and speculation made as to the result of this years harvest in Umatilla county. It will show whether the efforts of our farmers to improve their crops will be of nenefit. Never beforelias such a variety of of seed wheat from other localities been sown, farmers having lealizeJ tlie fact the best results are not attained when the seed from toe same soil is planted year by year. Several carloads of new seed w heat from the Willamette valley, were received and distributed. Mr. Cox.of Combs' canvon.who planted a small quantity of see I, received from the agricultural department for last harvest, raised twenty bushels to the acre, when little or nothing was obtained from t':e usual varieties sown in thu adjoin ing fields. This wheat was eagerly purchased for $2 SO per bushel, and a considerable amount has been sown for this season's har vest. It is be'ieved that these experiments will prove successful in which Umatilla county fanm-rs will have learned a valuable lesson. Teacher Examination. Xo'iceis hereby given that the regular pullic examination of teachers, for Linn county, will take p'aeein Albany, commencing on Wednesday, Feb. 25tli at 1 o'clock i'. m.. and continue until Friday noon, Feb. 27th. HuGas, our genial M. D., paid the metropolis a visit the first of the week. Albany, Eugene and liaise y each had good delegations at our masquerade last Friday. If you want a home in a good and lively town, you can lind no better place than Haarisburg. Dr. W. II. Davis, of Albany, was in the city on professional busi ness the first of the week. Our town is being visited by many strangers who are looking for homes. They will lind it diffi cult to secure a more promising location. A second house of agricultural implements and farm machinery will soon be established here. The manager will be our townsman, J. W. Ling. The masquerade ball last Friday evening was a grand success. About sixty tickets were sold, the maskers numbering about fifty. 1 lie best of order and a good time generally is reported. We understand that the con struction of the water ditch is an assured fact. This fact will be hailed with delight by all our citi zens, lor it assures the future pros perity and rapid growth of our city. The Ilarrisbure Lumber Co. will enlarge their mill in the near future. A lath mill and other needed improvements will be made. A side track will also be built from the station to the mill, that cars may be loaded in the yard next season. A remonstrance was circulated here last week against the division of the northern pait of Linn county. Though quile generally s gned it is Loped by many that it will never be sent to the legisla ture. Some good reasons are given w hv it should not be sent. GLEANINGS, Major Stevens, the man who stirred up the investigation of the silver pool, is the reiortei who, when a span fell out of the Wabash railroad bridge, precipitating a a train into tlie Missouri l iver and a number of passengers to their death, having arrived on the scene late al night, and linding the tele graph office across the river swam the treacherous stream, and thus scored a "beat." over his rivals. The poet Whittier has received, as a birthday present, a barrel of pitch-pine kindlings from "the Whittier Colored School at Tusca loosa, Ala. When the venerable mm lights these at his fireside he may see in the coals thereof pleas ant pictures of the good his tongue and pen have wrought forthe poor and oppressed everywhere. Joaquin Miller has placed a notice in a prominent place on his Califorira ranch warning olf in truders, especially tramps. The Poet of the Sierras was once in a tramp line of business himself to some extent, and there should be somew here in his heart a drop of charity for the tribe. It is said of David .Lu.ks, the Monterey county (Cal.) millionaire that he can ride 2) miles in , a straight line on his own land. lie is a Scotchman, and In 1840 stowed himself in a barrel on a vessel bound for California. It is bright newsy and clean, and promises well for the future. Speaking of railroads it stys. At the piesent moment Bay City is not the pos sessor of a railroad, but white it does not stand alone in the fact, it is unique in the calm and uncon cerned acknowledgment, for it knows that before another year rolls around it will have one rail road and probably two. The As toria & South Coast terminus is now only about thirty miles from this place and the company are now arranging to dispose of their bonds to an English company, when work will began all along the line. The Astoria & Albany railroad have located their line of road through here and have done a great deal of preliminary work, while the Southern Pacific has now a large force of surveyors working on a line from Sheridan here. It is safe to say that all! these lines will be built inside of two years. Wleat follows? The location of immense mill and all kinds of manufactories which wili make of Bay City a second Port land, as it is located w here freight will always below on account of water transportation. This is no roseate isioa of future pos-sbilities.- It is a concise statement of inevitable facts, The Tribune prints no map covered with a core of imaginary and impossible rail roads, but it simply presents the facts as they exist. They cannot he counterfeited or distorted. In short the railroad future of Bay City is bright and clear, ordered by those laws ol business that build roads and make cities.'' America Taken tlie Lead.
