K.iUht. .ill.13pmil2.20pm 3.4opui 7 45 a u TUB MI AAO IXTSRESTS. The diiect proximity of working minea to our city, makes t lie sub ject of mining one of paramount interest. There are few, perhaps, that appreciate the magnitude ami importance of thia branch of in dustry for the country. We glean from the Engineering and Mining Journal that the dividends during the last annual run amounted to a total of $13,743,743 paid during Hie year by 65 companies, against $10,537,522 paid by Cl companies in 1889. This great increase in amount wan due to the appearance of many new companies in the list, and to the larger amounts paid by many companies, notably those of Lake Superior, Montana, and Utah. There were in 1S90, 18 companies declaring their lirst dividends during the year, which paid $1,227,750, and 7 companies paying $380,500, which paid noth ing in 188!). There were, on the other hand, 22 companies not in the list of 18!X), which paid divi dends in 18S, but the total of their amounts, $817,700, was but little more than one-half that ol the new companies in the list of last year. In the case of the Lake Superior copper mines our statis tics are complete, and for that reason the m )st valuable. It ap pears that eight of these companies paid dividends to the amount of $3,415,000, an increase of $4 15,000 over the preceding year. The Calumet and Hecla paid :?,000, (HK), the same amount as in IS.sii; the Tamarack, $.7.10,000, an in crease of $l0,000; the Quincy, $320,000, an increase of $40,000 ; the Osceola, $525,000, an increase of $105,000; and the Fianklin, $100,000, and increate of $20,000. The Atlantic paid the same amount as in the preceding year, but the Central paid only $20,000, a decrease of $20,000. The Kear sarge paid $80,000, and declared its lirst dividend during the year. The market value of these tight Lake Superior companies, Janu ary 1st, was $3!.S45,O0O, anil their dividends of the year were 8.5 per cent, of this amount. Four of them paid over 10 er cent., and three more than 13 per rent. The Atlantic paid the largest percent age, viz., ltt.5 per cent. The total dividends paid by this group of mines amount to theimmensesum of $47,187,500, of which $34,S50.000 has been from the Calumet and Hecla. The Montana and Arizona copper companies also paid largely increased dividends. The Copjier Queen Company, of Arizona, paid $210,000, against $70,000 the previous year ; and the Boston and Montana $025,000, against $500,000 the former amount being a trifle more than 15.3 per cent, on the present value of its shares among the silver in'nes the list is headed by the famous Granite Mountain, which paid $2,400,000, the aarae amount aa in 1880, swell ing its total to an even;$10,000,000. The percentage paid on the market price of its shares, however, was a trifle less than in 1880, being 13.!) per cent., against 14.3 per cent. The Bimetallic adjoining the liranite Mountain commenced dividends during the year and paid $270,000. In I'tah, several of the important mines made not . lily in creased payments. The Ontaria declared dividends to the amount of $1 ,ti.".0,000, against $930,000 iu 18SD- the Mammoth, which commenced dividends in 1887 and paid $130,000 in 188!), jumped to 520,000 in lX'.ifl, making its total to date $720,000; the Horn Silver assumed its old position of importance ami paid $200,000, four times the amount of the preceding year; and the Centennial Eureka paid $150,000. The Daly made no increase, paying $450,000. On the Comstock Lode the year was not a prosperous one, and of the long list of famous old bonanza mines, the Consolidated California and ! Viginia alone appears in our table. Its dividends were $162,000, a de cided decrease from $756,000, the amount paid in 18S!). The Lead ville mines appeared to but little more advantage than the Corn stock, as the Little Chief and Small Hopes are the only ones in our last list of dividend payers. At the Carbonate camp, however, it must be remembered that the most important producing mines at the present time are unincorpo rated or owned by close corpora tions which make no public state ments. The same is the case at Aspen, of which mines we give only the Aspen mining and Smelt ing Company, paying $200,000, and the Little Rule, $100,000. The cure for consumption, that has been brought into notoriety by the German professor, is still an absorbing question before the peo ple for all are either directly or in directly interested. As has been said Dr. Koch's lymph ought not to be judged by the first case or the first half-dozen cases treated with It. The cure of consumption is necessarily slow, and one of the most humorous features of the American use of it is the assump tion that changes in the condition of a patient recorded day by day have any value. It is unfair, al so, to take well nigh hopeless cases of consumption and hope to make any radical cure. Koch's remedy will be a godsend if it checks the progress of lung dis eases which has not been fully developed or prevents the hjavy colds which are contracted so often in winter Ly people of low vitality from developing in chronic com plaints of the lungs. THE WORLD KNIUCHED. The facilities of the present day or the production of everything hat will conduce to the material welfare -and comfort of mankind are almost unlimited and when Syrup of Figs wa9 first produced the world was enriched with the on ly perfect laxative known, as it is the only remedy which is truly pleasing and refreshing to the tate and prompt arWeflectual tocleanse the system gently in the Spriu time or, in fact, at any time any the better it is known the moie popular it becomes.
