Fuiht...., ill.13pmil2.20pm 3.40uV7.4 j a ni THE COUNTY DIVISION, The demand of the people of the ''Forks cf the Siuitiaiu"' for a division of the county is not a question to be lightly considered. An overwhelming majority there demand a division. It is perhaps a national desire on their part, and it is the best division of the county that could be made. The county will some day be divided in one direction or another, and it is better to consent to the division now proposed than to cast oil' tin the southern portion. The South Santiam river is a fair dividing line, and if the people in the "Forks" want to fonn a new county out of that t;rritory their wishes should not be met with opposition by the people on litis side. Many of the leading citizens of Albany are willing for the division to be made, and since nearly all the voters in tin "Forks'" have finned the petition asking for the tiie prouosed division, it cannot consistently he refused and the legislature will no doubt take tin? fact into consideration. If the question should he sub mitted to a vote of the people of Linn connty the proposition would probably carry. The people of this city are inclined to consider the demand for a division of the county in a spiritof fairness, and a majority of the voters of Albany would not oppose it. A tenionstrance is being circu lated against the proposed division, bnt the fact remains that nearly '700 cut of Iho 750 voters in the "Forks of the Santiam" have signed the petition for a division. They are the eo,jle most aUt-ctcd, and their wishes should be law. They have almost unanimously demanded it, therefore let the division be made. Tub thereat made by some of the southern states to boycott the Columbian World's Fair, if certain legislation is not carried on to their notion, is very puerile in its nature. It smacks to much of the ancient last bravado, which never had any real, practical application. The Chronicle truthfully says that the absence of exhibits from the states named from the World's) Fair would not injure the exhibi tion materially, but the producers and business men living within their loundaries would Butler. The southerners have taken an entirely erroneous view of the World's Fair. They seem to as sume that the place of exhibition U the chief thing to be benefitted, whereas those who exhibit in the nature of things must be the chief gainers. If this were not the case a World's Fair would be impracti cable, for foreigneis would not send their goods to be exhibited merelj to minister to the vanity or glorify the nat'on holding the exhibit. If the people of Texas, Arkansas and Missouri fail to ex hibit it will only be a very stupid case of "biting of one's own nose to spite one's face." Governor 1'k.nsovkr says he does not aspire to be placed on the democratic ticket for president, Ir.it would prefer to enter this race for United States lenator from Oregon. His presidential boom, however, has assumed such pro portion!! that he ii already con sidered in the Fast as one of the available candidates in the event at the failure of Cleveland's selec tion. The American hog was defeated in the German Reichstag by a majority of thirty, and will here after remain excluded from that pork-loving empire. The Ameri can papers which n-ake the death of an occasional hog the basis for sensational articles about wide spread disease, may le than ki d for thi" German dislike of oi.r pork. Evidently the Corrupt Practices act of England is a far reaching measure if it defines a promise of a candidate to employ union men only as bribery. If this view of the act is maintained there will not be much show for an eight hour movement, for n) doubt it would he held that to promise t man shorter hours of labor would be a bribe. But how about the promises made to the other classes the land-ownerp, for instance will they be construed into viola tions of the Corrupt Practices act? The English will have to ta'te a much more liberal view of the right of suffragists to demand and of candidates to promise than they do at present if they wish to secure a perfect representative form of government. In Evanston, 111., a co operative housekeeping scheme was put in to operatior. But somehow it failed to meet the expectation of its originators, and the lawyers are picking over its assets ami lia bilities to ascertain how many substantial crumbs they can gobble bp. Nationalistic theories are line, when spun out to listen to, but practical application seems to destroy them completely. Chicago is battling with the question of a smoky atmosphere with the intention of placing a quietus upon the chimneys that vomit out the sooty ingredients by making them wear smoke con sumers. An inspector sits upon a commanding pinnacle and reports all offenders. Tii k proposition to divide Linn county is not a political question. The county would be about evenly divided politically should the division be made, and both parties would then be forced into putting their best men forward. It might result beni ticially to all parties. I.lttle (ilantaml CouleV rros. boys, misses and child ren's shoes different styles all sizes and widths made solid ai.i. tiikomgii.
