Carmel, III. The Engineering anl Mining Journal thinks the whole thing ia a fake. Itsaystheilinien siona of the tir.-st of the ships to le constructed are given as follows: The buoyancy chamlier will be 170 feet in length and 28 feet in diame ter, with a lifting jower of 5,500 pounds. The gas-engine will weigh but 2.10 tioundn, and will develop 100 horse iower. The total weight of the nhip will lie 1,350 pounds. It will accom modate 50 passengers and the cost of the ship will be $:'.,:H. Tliir. ight cost made pnyMitile by the laet that the company has its own process of making aluminum, of which the ships will be uhiios.len tirely constructed. Tliedaily press h?.t allow e 1 tins ? Ggures to pa;s without juestijn, but as- engineers we are f utlicientlv interested in the projected bhip t Stil.lv ill tigures a little and derive sonu further inloiination from tiiem. The buoyancy chamber, 17i feel long and 28 feet in diameter, would have a superficial area of nut less than 12,000 fij lare feet. If we as Uiii3 that the total weight of tin ship, 1 ,:'..")() Kunils, is only that ol the outsitle sheathing, allowing nothing for frame-work, machineiy or other inside structures or con tents, the weight of the sheathing ia only i bout 0.11 pounds per square foot. As aluminum weighs aliout I .'';) pounds per square foot 1 inch thick, this would mak-3 the thickness of the eheathirg only about 0.008 inch, or say Xo. ::: Birmingham gauge. The cubic contents of the buoyancy ehamlicr would be about !H 1,000 cubic feet. It Is probably to be Tilled with hydrogen gas, and the amount of the buoyancy can be easily cale l luted by assuming that the cham'.ier H buoyed up by force equal to the difference between the weigt t of y;),0ti0 cubic, feet of air and that of the same bulk of hyrogen. F-'it ossibry it is in tended to use a vacuum in which case the buoyancy wyuM be due to the weight of SHV,000 cub:c feet of air, or say 7,MK pounds. He ducting the weight of the sheath ing, we have 5,(5T0 po.inds as the net buoyancy of the chamlior, or very nearly the same as the lilting force, .5.500 pounds, nientu ned in the description. Hut this makes no allowance for weight of the frame-work necessary to boh! the ' sheathing in place, for the engines or other machinery, for the seats neceesary to accommodate the 50 passengers, and for oilier such trifles. The problem of building frame-work 170 feet diamett r st'tl" enough to prevent the collapse of the sheathing and to sustain the weight of itself and ounds of the passengers, machinery, etc., and yet not weighing over 5,500, would be pronounced impossible of solu tion by engineers accustomed to wcrk on steel ; but of course, there tre no structural imiossibilitieH in the creed of the Mount Carmel director. The cost of the ship, $:t,5lN, is put, we think, rather lo', lor we doubt if sny rolling mill in the world would contract to roll the sheathing of this ship. l'i.000 feet of aluminum end only .0US inch thick, fur much less than the whole figure named, even if it obtained the ingot aluminum lor notning. Mk. Jkssisos of Lane county has introduced a bill in the house. that will certainly com mend itself to the attention and supjioi t of all who.give it careful attention, for all are cognizant of the facts that call it into being. It provides that if any person shall shoot and wound or kill another, mistaking him for a deer, bear or other wild anim il he shall be guilty of criuiiial I I negligence, and upon conviction thereof shall be punished by im prisonment :n the penitentiary not less than three months nor more than three years, and by line not exceeding one thousand dollars. A law of this kind would un doubtedly exert an influence to J cause the hunter to use more care in bringing his deadly implement to bear upon some indistinctly seen j moving object in the brush which ho imagines but does not exactly know is a coveted deer or bear, and thereby prevent anguish and dis tress to surviving relatives and perhaps dejiendent children. The law should be added to the statutes of the state and be enforced until every person who hunts distinctly and fully comprehends its mean ing. House him, Xo. 32, introduced by Mr. "Welch, while it contains a pretence to reduce the rate of in terest, is in reality intended to re peal the usury law. It winds up with the provision that on con tracts parties thereto can agree upon any rale whatever, simple or compound. A cause that has to bide behind some entirely con trary pretense is certainly not very laudable to advocate. Representative Mkrritt of Jacksonville has introduced a bill toenlarge the privileges of women, by ma king it legal for a mother to appoint a guardian for her minor children. It is but one more step in the road towards the jierfect equality of the sexes and it is a credit to Mr. Merrill's good sense and broad minded views to have thought of. the subject, and acted upon his thought.
