Dlllil ri stoi-k nf l-i.liu' anuBxatiou of the Sandwich Islands to the United States. Placing sugar on the free list has made the little kingdom of Hawaii anxious for closer relations, and it is probable that definite proposi tions of annexation may be made ere long. The Chronicle eaya that in discussing annexation of ; the Hawaiian islands it must always be borne in mii.d that the business features of the proposi tion are the chief things to be con sidered. Can the United States afford to pay $(5,000,000 a year for the islands for that is about what they would cost us? We must go into the matter with our eyes open, and not closa the bar gain and examine into it after ward. The political effect of the purchase and annexation of the Hawaiian kingdom would proba bly be to our advantage, as it would effectually remove all dan ger of the islands falling into the hands of any European power. So long as we remained at peace with all the world the islands would give us no uneasiness, and would be beneficial to us com mercially in connection with the trade of the Soutli Pacific groups i ml Australia and New Zealand, ft can certainly do no barm to study over this question and make up our minds delilierately whether we want the Hawaiian islands, for the indications are that we can 'iave them if we want them and care to pay the price for them. The interview with William O'Brien in Paris is important in that it sets at rest all cpiestkn as to the disposition of the money collected by th Irish delegates oil their recer.t visit to this countrv. This money was not raised fir '1'ilitical p;irMMe9, but for the re lief of evirted tenants in Ireland, and Mr. OTrien g ves the positive Lsstirance that it will lie devoted Ut this object.
