A3 VIEWED BY OTHERS. j What the New Tear's Ore goaian Siys of , tbe C:ty of Albany. The big New Year's i.-ane of the Uregonian among otUer things, gays of Albany : . Albany iJ ratl.er appropriate! v relf-stvled the hub of tlie Willam ette valley. The reason for so designating it is because of tlu inimher of railroads radiating from this point in various directions. North and south through the citv runs tlie Southern Pacific railroad, Albany hing on this line about eight mi'es distant from Portland. F.ast an I west the city is traversed by tlie Oiunon Pacific road, which has an ocean terminus on Yiupiina bay, and which is constructed east ward at present into the Cascade mountains. Th.: objective point of the eastern extension of the road is Poise City, Idaho, and up on its completion to this jilr.ee it will become one tf the great trans contiueu'al linos of the country. Uuiiniiig S'liith'.'ii' t from Allniny a distance of about sixteen miles, is a branch of the Southern Pacific load, connecting Albany with Lebanon. A line of mad is pro ji'cted from Albany to Astora, at the mouth of the Columbia, and preliminary surveys have already been made. Indications point strongly t the c iiiiiiivnecnient -!' work on this line at a very earlv date, and its completion w ill aid immensely to Alb.ny's import ance. From the foregoing it must be conceded that Albany's claim- to (he title of llie Hub City are well founded, for no other city in the entire valley can boa-it of as many railroad connections as Albany can. Tlie city, by returns of the cen sus, shows a population of over TtHM people, h is the county sea of Linn county, one of the most xipilous, progressive and prosper ous counties of Oregon. 'I he city is very nicely laid out, and is nio-t substantially built. On First (itreet, the main business t borough l ire of the citv. cm be seen a great many line and impositt;; t.xisiness houses. Albany tvrtainly has a very bright future, for, first, situated as it is in the midst of a liu.t agricul Ini.d country, of which it is flie ehicf market, and snp,ly Ration, it will always rank as a lirst-elass oiisines-i point.
