Six new placer claims were filed in the - county recorder's office in this city yesterday as follows: West Shore No. 1, by V. Read and G. W. Maston. West Shore Xo. 2. by K. Lnnning and M. C. Bingham. West Shore No. 8, by J. Cowan and J. W. Gardner. West Shore No. 4, by N. F. J. I.. II. Allen and Geo. K. Chamberlain. West Shore No. 5, by C. (i. Burkhart and C. K. Brownoll. West Shore No. 0, by N. II. Allen, M. C. Bingham and J. W. Gardner. A new coniDany is being foi ined composed of tbe following parties, who have secured possession of 1 152 inches of water from the north fork of the South Santiam for the development of their claims: .1. L. Cowan, J. W. Gardner, N. II. Allen, W. F. Read, G. W.Maston, C. G. Burkhart, C. K. Brownell, Geo. K. Chamberlain, . T. Bryant and W. II. Bingham. The claims of the new company are situated three miles from (Juartzville. A new road is being constructed to the mines by way of Sweet Home. The road is com pleted to within 'a miles from the camp, the road makers being now at Lewis cabin. Heretofore Stanpcde Mountain on the road to tiie mines from Gatesxille haa prevented fret travel to and from the mines, but this new road will obviate this, as it follows the low land along the river, which even in winter is comparatively free from snow. The nearest postoffice is Whit comb, 22 miles from the mines, which is at the mouth of the mid dle fork of the South Santiam. Ti.m Greenhorn district, where several Albany men expended con -iderable capital early in the titties, is 30 miles from the mines, and is also the end of the old wagon road from the valley. Sweet lb. i.e, ld.-'i is the end of the Bt .ge 1:1. , i.- ;7 miles distant, and I -l s'.an-e .i.i ii Albany is tit miles. The ronntry has not been gobbled up by speculators, ami there is abundant room for those who wieh to locate cl-iims, or purchase thoe in a fair state of development 11 they des re invest. ' The mines are chiefly g-ild nml silver, althotigh cooper and other baser ores exist, which may in the future le worked with success. Tbe lining values in the district is shown in a recent purchase Messrs Woodin A Warner bought of Port hiixl men a half interest, in the Golden Fleece mine for $!()();). When they tried a few days later to purchase the other half it was held at the modest Him of $10,000. The mill ol the Albany Mitiiii" & Milling Co. is now doicg good work. '.. One thing tbe district needs is mail facilities. From 1".; to 300 men are engaged in mining there, and the nearest poblofnve fsGates ville, 20 m'les away. Some one tf the mail routes ought to be ex tended, so as to rea-ih thin grooving mining district. Sufficient it suits have been obtained to demonstrate that the richness of these mines has not been overestimated, and tli- if i 1.0 longer any l. u!t of the tact they are soon to u-come an imMirtant iactor in tbe it.dus trial growth of this ortioii of Or egon. It might be added that along the new road opened via Sweet Home, above Wbitcomh, are large tracts of Iwtli surveyed and un surveyed timber lands, which is yet vacant and opn to settlement. ofttcctrn Eleeted. Thee gentlemen immediately re paired to their property, situated on the river front, and after look ing over the situation of the ba k decided upon the plan 01 a wharf boat and freight house, or, inothcr words, a floating dock. This bo.t will be one hundred feet long by thirty-three wide, with a house coveting one-half its length ai:d about three-fourths the width be anchored in the river and an the stream rises it will also come up with it.
