HOW THE IX UiPiE.'iSS ) Pruftttor loch Eiplaiui Hit Great Di" ooTtry to EmprtsiFr From Ber'.in comes the report that the lymph used bv Professor Kim Ii for the cure of tuberculosis i iii-p.4ieii :;i an incubating stove will. in a ix c- liiut is hermetically kittled iiiid fcKiil.zed and thereby rendered from fungus. The interior ol 1 airtight space is di vided by an ungloced, i orcelain diaphragm into an upper and lower section. In the uper section is placed a salted meat broth in a gelatinous state, containing colo nies of the tubercle germ. This mass gradually liquifies and the gelatine liquid drops slowly through the porcelain plate into the lower section. The liquid then contains all the secretory products. . but is free from all living or dead verms or reproductive spores, and is the lymph as used. By the injection of the lymph the tubercle germ is killed, and at the same time the injected parti cles retain sufficient strength to detach and exel the dead germs, together with the dead tissue. The reparative process ensues and healing follows. A meeting of the Medical Socie ty Mas held at which Professor virchow, the celebrated German physician, prepuled. Professor Vifchow made an address, in which be defended ProfesBor Koch against (he charge of having prematurely published the facts regarding his discovery. The first info'iimtion he gave regarding the siil j Pro feasor Virchow said, wus given to the Medical Congress lecently held in Berlin, audthe !'- l.-stires he then made were in . i ; ! i iiice with the urgent request of :i com mittee of the Congress and l)r Von Go?sler, Prussian Minister of Ec clesiastical Affairs, Education and Medicinal Affaiis. f Villanl aud Ouulil. There is a great deal alioiit Mr. Villard's liiiaMiering calculated to call out a tolerant admiration. His genius in the way of getting together an unrivaled colled ion of spei-i:!:itive cats and dogs, and by capitalizing them under a ivi jura tion with a new kind o: name, erecting a glittering faluic of credit, is something phenomenal even among the fraternity of sto:k infiaters. But an even more ex ceptional featuie of Mr. Villard's genius, and one which almost reconciles his victims to him, is that for getting caught in the col lapse of his own bubbles, .tsy Gould's process oi getting a worth less property in shape to float on the unsuspecting public is slow and painstaking beside the dash ing achievements of Villard in the same line; but his finale to every such woik of art, in the form dl unloading and getting his profits safely in the batik before the drop couiert, is almost as certain as the two proverbial certainties, death and taxation. Mr. Villard, on the other hand, while floating his bubbles with a dash that leave Gould far in the rear, sticks to them till the catastrophe comes down in the general smash, an 1 then gets on his feet again, with a gallantry that almost indicates the belief on his part that his at tractive balloons are real and solid values. Pittsburg Dispatch. Ouune Lake DiUi)itrluK. From the following report' it seems likely that ere long only the name will remain of the once fam ous Goose lake. The report says : Goose lake, in Lake county, has dried up to such an extent that whole sections of land are made vacant, and lately the land office atLakeview received twenty -eight filings on land mode vacant by the exhalation of the lake water. Conn A Hendricaon ! ! ! 8T0LE A JtUTTOH. Bat Their Feast Wti Buddy IuterrnpUa by th Ofictrt- The Pendleton East Oregonian. says: Near the railroad bridge below town Saturday evening four members of the society generally known as "box-cer tourists" werj prey ar ing for a glorious feast on a mutton stolen from Mehrboch & StenslofTa . meat market, when their feslitives were rudely and aadly interrupted. Officers Culp and Johnron had been notified of the theft, and thinking it prob ably that the holioes had goue in that direction, took a tour below town. They arrived just in time to put a stop to the banquet, and the visions of a square meal en tertained by the hungry unfor tunates were dispelled. They weie marched back to town forth with, and are now enjoying the chilly hospitality of the city jail. The trial of the hobos for larceny will take place this evening. New Fast Boat. From Puget Sound comes the news that Captain A. B. Scott, of Portland, builder of the steamers Fleetwood and Telephone, No. 1 and 2, all boats of extraordinary speed, is about to begin the con struction of two steamers which, it isexpected, will ou run anything on the Sound or Columbia river. The steamers are to lie 174 feet long and M feet beam, and are to be of the propellor model, with the strongest engines commensur ate with safety on boats of that size. It is Captain Scott's inten tion to put the lioats in the Taco in a Seattle trade, making the trip lietaeeu the two cities in one hour, carrying nothing but passengers, making the round trip witli the two Uats every hour and ten minutes, the ten minutes being allowed to cover the time consumed in embarkation and disembarka tion. The lit at of these boats is expected to be finished by July 1, 18!U. The machinery has been ordered. The best time made ho far between the two cities is one i.our and 29 minutes, the record of the T. J. Potter. A f lucky CauoelHt, Albert Kapplege, the canoeist sent out by the New York Mail and Express to cross the continent by water in a canoe, nearly reached the end ol tus journey last night. He passed Tuesiay night at St Helens, and was seen by a report er thera Wednesday morning as he was about to resume his tire Koine voyage down the river. His frail craft is in a badly demoralized condition, and is hardly safe to continue on down the river.but he haid that if it went underlie would aw im ashore and let it go. He an ticipates no further trouble, as a river captain gave him instructions at St Helens how to round Tongue point. When he reaches Astoria Mr Rapplege will leave for Port land, and on his arrival send his canoe home. It is to be exhibited at the World's fair. The object of Mr Kapplege's trip of t750 miles by water is to advertise the jour nal employing him. At every tel egraph station he sends his paper a line, and once a week he gives his experience in a letter. I'Ie Driving, i At Corvallis Cain. McCulloiigh A Co. recently completely a thor oughly equipped pile driver, a machine for w hich there has long been a demand at Corvallis and at other points on the river. The owners have secured a contract from the Benton Condty Flouring Mills Co. to drive 'ISO feet of piling in front of their mill in this city. The piling is 45 feet long and is to be driven 10 feet into the earth, faced with heavy boards ami planked over, thus giving addi tional space about the mill. J. A. Catithorn has also engaged this machine to drive 1500 feet of piling along the front of his warehouse property, and there will be con siderable other work of the same nature performed along the city's water front., , These improvements became necessary on account of the incursions of the high wi.teis, the current being strong on the west side of the river at this point. Gazette. The Corvallis Kevetlineiit. The high water last winter seri ously damaged the government work on the river at Coivallis, put in to prevent the channel from leaving the city, and its resetting ifi earnestly solicited. The Gazette says : A party of government sur veyors under direction of J M (Hipp, arrive I in Corvallis Satur day and began a thorough survey of " the river between a joint five miles abovo the city and a mile below where the overflow empties into the main channel. The party will lie at this point about a month or six weeks. but it is not probable that we shall be able to learn any thing concerning the result of their lahois before their report ami re commendations rei cli congress. Attempted Inrendlarlaui, A fire alarm sounded at 0:30 last evening, to which the lire de partment quickly responded. A blaze was discovered in a smoke house in a smoke house in the reiir of Bhultz Itroa. meat market. 1' was evidently the work of an in cendiary, and but for its timely discovery a serious conflagration miL'ht have ensued. Mr Slinltz siys that an attempt was made several weens ago 10 tire me ihiiki ings. but the tire hug was fright ened away. The police force are on the lookout for such villains, and should anv more attempts be made they are likely to come to grief. New Offlcem. The Y. W. C. T. There is no question of the ability of the company to pertonn all and more than they propose. A telegram was read from the treasurer of the compauy that plenty of money was at hand to prosecute the work at once. A letter was from the president who expressed hie confidence in the future of Yaquina bay, and says that in his opinion this pro posed improvement will do more to develop the country than any thing that has been proposed. Lirge hotels will be completed for summer traffic. A national bank will be established as soon as a suitable building can be erected. Extensive street improvements will lie commenced soon, the char ter will be amended, and the city limits extended. Those present subscribed $20, 000 as a subsidy to secure the building of the line. The New port Improvement Company is composed of some of the most substantial citizens in the whole Willamette valley, and it is under stood Portland capital is inter ested to a large extent in the new enterprise which they haye in hand. Ilia I'eonle Were Wealthy. It is said that J. J. McKeirney, who died at Tacoma last Sunday of typhoid fever, was working, when taken sick, as a day laborer in a logging camp near that city. He told nothing about himself.and every one about the camp supposed he had neither money nor friends, .since his death it is learned that his parents, who live in San Jose, Cal., are quite wealthy. He had a quarrel wih his family and left them, determined to make his wav in the world without paternal aid. The young man's remains were embalmed, placed in a !00 caske and shipped to his home. I.
