ORKQON PACIFIC T1MR TABLE. Arrive Depart .ill lSpmlll20piu 3"omiy.4 a an THE THEORIES OF MICROBES. Tjas new science in the medical practice, baaed upon the theory of the microbe foundation of disease, and the cure of it by battling with thow atomic germs, is making rapid progress. The Koch cure fur consumption is directly in that line nd seems to promise a fair degree of meets?. The discussion of this subject elicit many important facts and disseminates much useful know ledge. The Boston Transcript in referring to it in general terms t)S when science becomes better acquainted with the character and habits of the different k nds of microbes, " their action on the h uman body and their antagonism one to another, then, perhaps, may be witnessed of all warfares the most remarkable the deadly struggle of microscopic germs for mssteiy iu the system of a living creature. This internecine war fare of germs is comparatively a new notion, and differs entirely f-oni the plan of inoculation for the pre vention or cure of disease. The theoiy of vaccination to prevent smallpox and of inoculation to cure hydrophobia is that the in troduction of a disease germ into the body of the patient that disease in a modified form, ami ' that the material in the body fitted to develop such a disease is that - used, or so that when the more violent of the disease appears it has nothing upon which to feed, and is harmless. The new theory is based upon newly-discovered of real antagonhm between dis ease germs that results when they are brought into contact in the mutual destruction of each. The son of a Russian dot tor was attacked by diphtheria, and finally his case was pronounced hopeless. When death seemed Imminent, however, the patient was attacked with erysipelas. For a time he was worse, then recovered com pletely. His father, the doctor, was somewhat puzzled by the turn of affairs, b.it suddenly the facts of the se struck him, and he began the cultivation of erysipelas germs, with which he inoculated diphtheria patients w it h startling success. The doctor claims that the erysipelas germ attacks the diphtheria germs, and that the result is their mutual destruction. If the germs of erysipelas and diphtheria are antagonistic and mutually fatal, it is but reasonable to expect that further investigation will show that there are other germs similar ly antagonistic to each other, and that from these researches a system of inoculation may be evolve that may be of great benefit to humanity. It baa further bje ' established that there are con tained in the blood of all higher animals certain cells, called tor mi d phagocytes, identical with white ' blood corpuscles, which are en dowed witb the power of inde pendent motion, which move about in the blood and even out aide the tissues, and devour and digest any bacilli, whether poisonous or not, with which they come in contact. This, then, is the secret of a body leing healthy even in the midst of disease laden air. Ho long as these phagocytes hold their own against bacill1, just so long will it remain healthy; but when for some cause these guardians of the system become inoperative from decay or over work, then the poisonous hordes of parasites pass into the s stein, it not fought with other germs, as mentioned above, and destroy it. In the phagocytes may be seen oue of the most remarkable examples of .the completeness of nature's handiwork. Tub future historian of the TJiuui States, when discussing the phenomenal progress of the country during the period since the war of the rebellion, will be sure to give the credit to the republican party for promoting it. The fact that during this period a manufactur ing industry rivaling that of the Old World was built up will be attributed solely to the efficacy of sound protection laws. No matter what may be 'he economic condi tion of the world a century or so hence the people inhabiting it will be sure to be shrewd enough to recognize the fact that it would have been useless for the United States to have struggled against the accumulated capital of the older nations unless aided by a fiscal policy calculated to minimize the advantages of superior equipped rivals. The economic struggle of the present century will be perfectly understood, an'l no one will be heard then to call protection a mistake, any more than one could now hear an in formed Englishman assert that Edward III and Elizabeth were wrong to protect English manu facturers and do all in their power to tempt foreign artisans to make their homes in England. So CAUSE FOR ALARM. Thekk is m cause for alarm re garding the financial situation. The only element of danger w hich has seriously threatened the sta bility of things has manifested it self from the other side of the Atlantic. But the outlook in that quarter has ceased to be grave. So far as regards the condition and prospects of the banks throughout the country, there 'is nothing in the outlook which need cause any apprehens'on. The St Louis Globe Democrat in discussing the situa tion says that as was the cafe in 1884, this iB merely a disturbance in Mock values. The derangement and depression are not likely to be lelt far beyond the arena of the .Stock Exchange. For the time being, dealings in railway shares will he t 'ended with considerable ri-k, aUh. iiiJi rn advance along tf.tr hol 1 i!i the near future is iiitii :;!!. Hut whether this depression be lung or short, the stability of the hanks as a whole will not be affected. This was the experience in 1884, when the situ ation, so far as concerns the stock market, was much like that which prevails at present. The banks, however, are in better condition than they were in then. As com pared with that time, their reserves are gieater, their allium are being conducted with more conservatism and. intelligence, and they have had a longer perioi in which to prepare for any hi rain which could present itself. Let the public be calm. The hanks of the country were never stronger than they are at this moment, and there is nething in sight or in prospect which could threaten their solidity or offer a serious menace to general business. The Prime Minister of Austialia now suggests the forming of an Australian nation ; the movement lor Home Kule in In! inl is daily growing stronger, ai..l lend ing Canadian newspapers advocate annexation with the United States. If England wants to avoid trouble from all these scat tered de(enden(-ies, it might give them up voluntaiily and confine its government to the "right little, tight little island" in the channel. It is but a question of time when only newspaper men can Httbr.i to carry on a war. The other day at the navy departments bids were opened for supplying our navy, that begins to sound big now doesn't it? With armor piercing projectiles, and the lowest bids were $150 each for 8 inch shot and $520 each for 10 inch shot. ' Tub advice of Gladstone to Farnell to resign the leadership of the liberals will probably letire that gentleman from the field of Irish politics.
