The senator! and representatives at Washington are already as sembling at the national capital fr the winter t-rm of congress. The public will watch their delib erations at the approaching vision with especial interest. The Washington Star in discus sing the question as to whether there is an obligation on the part of the Fifty-first Congress to heed the result of the resent election in timates that the only considera tion which will address itself to that body is one of expediency After alluding to the fact that the party in power may conclude that the causes of defeat were so com plicated and varied that no raodi lication of policy can meet the case, the Star still thinks that there may Ins excellent reasons why the republican leadership in the present house should somewhat alter its course. "Absolute con sistency in things political," says the Star, ''is treated a the virtu of fools only." There seems to 1 a sort of Bnnsby like oracularism in these suggestions. 11 is dim cult to understand what warrant the republicans will have for changing their coarse if they are unable to decide what were the causes of the recent defeat. Jfr tainly no sane man will say thai Kansas was lost on account of the McKinley bill, or that Pennsyl vania defeated Delameter because the republicans revised the tariff on protection lines. If the Star means to advise the republican yarty should change its principles or trim its sails to catch the popu lar breeze it will not succeed in making many converts. The re publican party is not a party of expediency, and is not led away by every ism. It has certain well defined ideas of government and propose to stand or fall by them. Itn consistency to principle has been rewarded by the people who have given the party their con fidence for a quarter of a century pa9t, and it dos not propose at this 'ate day to imitate the demo crats who ht.ve in turn embraced every ism and heresy with no other object than to secure the loaves and fishes. In viewing the situation's H ol land, as far as it relates to the (acmise of i s dead king, now lying In the mortuary casket prepared for final interment, one cannot hut exclaim what an enigma is man. Still the royalty worship inherent in humanity, from age of cultivation, clings so tenaciously that even an object of real loathing Is venerated and esteemed. The greatest wonder in the case is that in this age of the world, when examples ol superior governmental affairs in human life, are so prevalent and ognizant to every individual, that a useless and even disreputable imbecile could be allowed to hold on to the reins of authority as an ruler. Thsks will ba one test of the sincerity of the democratic party in congress that has not yet Wen alluded to, which will nevertheless be applied. If the democratic leaders were sincere in their accu flattens against the tariff law, they will let the law stand as it is, as an efficient campaign against the republican party. If on tbe other band their accusations nave been for nartisan purposes only, they mill endeavor to repeal the lw in order not to let it refute thtir atatuents and prove itsell a bene ficent act. The probable first move that they will make will be to repeal the law. If they will let it stand the republicans will ask no greater favor of them for the law will work out its own salvation. The kicking at Speaker Reeu that is so vigorously carried ol. at present, from 'certain quarters, sounds very much like the bluster of big school boys who have been made by the master to attend to their duties and learn their lessons. They can do no other way to vent their spleen than to call the mas ter bard names, which they do with a pletboria of adjectives, and that is just what the kickers are doing to Tom Reed now. The people stick by the school master and the people will stick by Tom Reed and efficient work in congress. TnERE is talk of a statute to Gen. Grant, to be erected near the White House in Washington, in spite of the fact that the General's remains will, in all probability, be left in their present resting place in River View park in New York city. The movement is a sensible and praiseworthy one, and if it is undertaken it will be consumatd long before New York erects the promised monument. It is said that our country wil soon have a monopoly upon the geyser business as the geysers in Iceland are waning al most to extinctions and will soon fail to gey-ser at all. Our Yellow stone park big spouters will then rule the world. Thk new situation in railroad matters is thus referred to by the Alta: "Jay Gould seems to have pocketed the Union Pacific in the recent shuffle, while the Standard Oil folks have greased the Northern Pacific and swallowed it."
