Di'Kiso the past week there was kuncbed from the Brooklyn navy yard the ship-of-war Maine, which is ttia first of the big war vessels ti be added to the naval forcts of the United States and which is calculated to place our navy on an equality with the modern navies of the European powers. The Maine is the largest vessel in the navy of this country, suf ficiently protected by armor to be , available for offense or defense and to cope with the best vessels In the navies of foreign ccoun tries Just now there is an ad versa current of opinion upon the Bub jei t of enormous war ships. Eng lish, critics have pointed out the inherent weakness of these marine monsters, and have called atten tion to the fact that the huge ordi nance with which they are armed ia not only extremely complicated and difficult to be handled by any except experts, but it is apt to be structurally weak and liable to be come a source of dt nger to those no are operating it. Big ships imply big guns, and the question is being asked in all seriousness whether the matter of size has not been overdone, and whether ninaller vessels are not, on the whole, more effective. Tlie United states is serving its apprenticeship at navy building Thus far the work we have turned out would do credit :o the niastei builders of the world, but we must not hasten too rapidly. There is ample time to let other nations make experiment and to profit l.y theie mistakes. It may be that we need a number of big fighting ships like the Maine, but b fose Me go too extensively into that Wm.l of naval construction we should know somewhat more of the actual work accomplished by the enormous ships of the English Fieiuh and Italian navies European war would be extremely useful to the United states it that aspect of the case, kr then we could see the big ships in fightiug array and see what they could do The evolution of the Thomas cat is a m itter of interest, and the New York Independent h Btii.lio.1 the sullied aud 8Js: It is geiieral'y taught that the domes li.r cat was first domesticated in Egypt, the Greeks and Romans ot i assessing it, and that the at was not known to have lived in Itily earlier than about nine cen turiea before the Crusades. The hand of Jay Gould is the all conquering power in railroad matters at present, and his man date promises to be the Juliog cry in every matter pertaining to rail roads.
