Society jeople have had a very lively week of it. Aside from he grand ball, which of course was the crowning eveut, the churches and theatrical entertainments monopolized the public attention. It includes the jierforniaiice of America's greatest emotional actresf, Clara Morris, together with Mir Neally Stevens' musical and ttie Liberatti concert. FAREWELL RECEPTION. The Woman's Missionary Soci ety of the Presbyterian church tendered a farewell reception to their departing president, Mrs. J. K. Elderkin. at the elegant home of Mrs. .1. M. Irving on Friday evening. The spacious drawing room were beautifully decorated with smilax and yellow chrysan themum, while the banks and de signs of autumn foliasie were brought out in all their rich color ing under the electric light. An elaborate and dainty tea was t-rved at five o'clock. After some farewell remarke by Mrs. Elder kin. she was presented with a handsome plush album, contain ing the autographs of the members of the society. Jt was a very pleasant and social all'air. CLARA MORRIS. rrulav evening- Albany was treated to one of the finest dramatic renditions ever in tl.e city by Clara Morris in"CamilIt Apparently the actress was living th 1 ne as hud down by her lnu-s &d her portrayal ot the part va almost bevond criticism. At times she was intensely dramatic, but tier enunci ition was simply por ted, and every word was spoken in that clear, distinct, natural voice so pleasing to all audiences. Ihe death scene was especially true to nature. J. M. Col vine as Armand Duval made a strong im- pretfeisn by his artistic work. The entire support was excellent. MISS SEALLY STEVENS. This winning and talented artist ave one of her charming concerts at the opera house Thursday even ini; to a lanre auaience. aiiss Stevens has gained for herself an enviable reputation among mu sical people, and this favorable impression was fully sustained in this city. Her selections were admirably chosen and the pro gramme was very interesting, and included selections from Mozart Chopin, Mendelsohn, Moskowski and l.izt. Messrs. C. W. Sears, J. C. Littler, W. II. Lee ami C. II. i 1 art rendered some choice vocal music. Taken all in all the re cital was one of the most enjoya ble and agreeable concerts ever presented to an Albany audience. THE (iRANII BI.L. Tuesday evening found society in this city in a fever over the grand ba!l given by Temple Com- mandery, No. 3, Knights Templar, 1 Albany, in honor of the Grand Coinium.dery of the state of Ore gon. A concert was tirst given by Liberates band. At nine o'clock about one hundred coupics formed on the floor and participated in the grand march. Bright faces ere on every side and the meriy laugh and witty jest bp)ke plainly the feelb gs of the dancers. The ojiera house had been beau- i fally deeorated, and all entered into a maze of the waltz with a zest and enjoyment pleasing to behold, ri.e music was excellent and the dancing continued nr. til about : o'c'ock. The suits against the Albany Farmers & Merchants' Insurance Company, which w-re on the docket for this term of the ciicuit court, have caused various rumors which need correcting. The tacts of the business are that these suits ail come from the - East, and are the result of misplaced worn. In some there is merit and they will be settled, inothe s there is n.i merit whatever. The company ha always promptly met its just c'ainis and settled the losses, and now 01: ly owes three losses due in November and December. The Eastern business has been discon tinued by cancelling ali the oli cies in that locality on September 18'.H). Mr. J. O. Writsinan has b-en appointed secretary and man ager. Since the company's organ ization it has paid upwards of jf!M),W0 lire losses. The Salem Statesman says: At the annual uieetin,-ot the Knights Templar of the state at Albany Tuesday, aside from the election of officers, a considerable amount of business of importance was transacted. Among other things, a new commandery, consisting of fourteen members, was established at Ashland, being recommended by Eugene. A new one was also ordered at Pendieton, but no charter was issued, on account of some inaccuracy in the papeis. Hut the Pendleton commandery will work cn just the same, lieing granted a dispensation until the charter has been issued. No re quest was made for a commandery at, Salem, although one will no doubt be asked established here next year. At this time there is no ladge room in Salem in which the work of the Knights Templar could be properly performed. Probably when Salem has a Masonic temple she will have a commandery. The Timber Depredation War. The Ashland Tidings says : The timber war on Wagner creek still rages. This week Melvin Atwa'er, John D. Atwater and J. Aid were arrestee, by deputy U. S. Marshal A. T. Kyle, charged with having cut a large quantity of timber on government land, and sawed it in to lumber at their sawmill for sale. The complaining witness is John Marcum. who alleges that the de lendants have worked up a great quantity of timber in their mill which they cut upon a certain quarter section ol government land. A. Detendants were held in $250 bonds each to appear before the next IT. S. grand jury at Port land, they all turnished bands Severely Burned. A few evenings ago savs the Brownsville Times, Mis. R. C Warner, met with what might have been severe, it not latal accident. Shs was pointing some papers in the (stove when, somehow, her apron string became ignited. It flamed up immediately and set her lotlieson lire. She started to get a bed quilt with which to wrap around herself in order to smother the (mines, but succeeded in get ting the lire out before -die reached .be bed, but not until her right h-n.d was very severiy burned. Particulars of the robbery of ex United States Senator James K. Kelly, on board the train for The Dalles Thursday morning, are giv en by the Times-Mountaineer: "As he was going through the ves tibule of the Pullman car he no ticed two men in front and two behind them. Very soon the man ahead turned around and said to the men behind, 'This is not the car,' and jostled roughly against ex-Senator Kelly. He was an noyed and 8oke rather harshly, 'If this is not your car, it is mine, a d allow me to go on board.' He noticed he was in close juxtaposi tion to the men, and as thev Btepped off the platform put his hand into his pocket and found that every cent had been taken. The train was then in motion, and it was unsafe to step oIL Colonel Kelly had his cane in one hand and his grip in the other and was powerless to resist the theives rifl ing his pockets. When he stated from Portland he put $2" in bis pocket, enough to pay his ex lienses to The Dalles and return.
