OOn MINING INDUSTRIES. Comment Uou the ailver iitiea tion ia still indulged in on all sides, and villi as many different opinions almost a there are in dividuals commenting. The Oregonian is worried with the idea that our gold is going to Austria, while other papers recognize that, the silver law is a benefit. The Chronicle says : K, O. Leech, Director of the Mint, has just returned to Washington from a visit to a number of the mines in the West. Shaking of the trip he said he foucd great activity in all the mining camps which he v:sited, and an evident increase in the silver product of the United States. He says: "Considering that only a thort time ago miners were getting only yj cjuts an ounce for silver and 2J4 cents a : pound for lead, while to-day silv. r j is worth $1 10 an ounce and lead 6 cents a pound, it is not surnris-; ing that theie should be activity ! WISdk tf 1 . . ' y nvn vi mici menus ueuer prices lor tlie output of the farm. It is in this apect of the case that our inining 'ndustries are'encour.igpd, anu noi solely because silver may ixv be sold for $1 10 an ounce instead ! f 110 cents, j The contention of the silver men ; hai been amply justified, that is ' in mining industries, and that the output be increased." i Aor dees Mr. Leech tell the whole of the story, nor even the most important part of it. The rise in the price of silver has been accompanied by a rise in the price of other domestic products, so there is hardly an article produced in the United states which has not felt th stimulus of letter prices. This action, ltesides taneous, is recipror price for farm products and the! like implies a better price for sil- j ver quite as much as a rue in the j than an advance in tne price of,An artUte of n'sl " ,,,k wi" 'iano silver wrmt.l Unn,Altl t.r.. o"'' '!"!." Artists U a .1 v our great agaicultmal industries. Tne re is some complaint just now, we notice, on the part of the brewers, that barley and hops 1 i ... .. iiciauuuiii liner, oui cer - tainly the interest of the pi o - ducers of barlev and horn nriM.nirp ..... ... : . . i aa mucn 10 oe considered as a possible diminution in the prcfits of the brewers." O.n'ce again the dinner-bucket argument has received an awful black eye. This time it is admin-is-ered by the New York Tribune, which oints out that the duty on tin pljte will not be changed until July 1, K91, rud the same time gives some tiguiea showing how much the cost ought to be in creased to the consumer, provided lie is ciiled upon to pay, as free traders assert, all of tiie tariff. The Tribune says: "A dinner kettle holding three quarts, now costing $1 -14 per dozen, or 1' cents each, weih'ng one i-ound foi:r ounces, by the new du'y may be increased in cost to lScents it tbe whole of the duty is ad'.'ed to i the present price of plate, but the retail price is now 5 1 et-ntf. 1'laiiily no dealer will charge 51 cents becauseof '.he duty. Ho four quart milk par.s, now touting 65 cents per dozen, iui;bt cost o..'J cents each ia consequence of the I new duty, bit they no retail fcr . 2-) cents each. The difference he t veen the wholes lie c st and the rvt til pricj is now to great as to all thi c'asa of products that ' lire insignificant uddition to cost ly reason of the duty will not affoul the consumer in the slight est degTee." .'. The active effo-t of the parti fan folitk-ians, in the ttites in which elect o:is are jn ii din", are tbiown inVt the s-:ilcs to piove that the r.ew Uiilf M-i;el:iIt ie ia making more cost for the people on the necessaries of life. Especi ally is this the fact in the close state of Connecticut. The Tri bune, in commenting on the situ ation there says that the pe.iple are aked to vole down the now tariff before they have had tiuie t test its working or to see its benefits realized. They sire told by free trailers that all necessaries of life have b;?en enhanced in cost, though in fact nut a hirgle Mu-ii article has an increased duty, but on very many du?i.;s have been reduced. If falsehood can limrp the place of truth, voters may be persuaded that every time an ex. tirtionate trader naik up tl price of anything, it is because oi the taritf. The hope if. that voter? may thus be led to pronounce against a wise, far-sighted and beneticient nieasniu before thej have a chance to see its results. Rut Connecticut voters have not often leen deluded in that fashion and have shown their ther earnest appreciation of the propective jolicy repeatedly. Many demo crats in that state believe in pro tection, and will not hesitate to defend their convictions again, when assailed as they were by the Mills bill, and are now Ly those who are moving the entire party into tlie free trade channel. The truth of the remarks arc as appli cable to other localities as they are to the state of Connecticut, in fact the situation is the same any where in the county. Kansas City the other day con tained i.ne woman who was thoroughly ashamed and cognizant of the disgrace of having become addicted to the use of intoxicating liquors. She was drunk and arrested and taken to jail, when she bun herself by the use of the waist of her dress, tying one sleeve around her neck and the other around a cross bar. Sfhe wis dis covered and cut down in time to save her life. Then the made six separate attempts to end her life by hanging, using in succession for a rope strips of her white skirt, strips from her petticoat, her cor set strings, a sash, her etockings, and finally her very nether gar- ments. She was complet dy nude when last discovered, the vaiious j articles of clothing used for ropes I i : . i xi r , i having been taken from her i muvijiii uvtrii ittKeu iruui uer eaim respective time she attempted to hang herself. It was finally found to be necessary to bind her bands and feet and strap her to the cot in the cell to prevent her killing herself. NEW TO-DAY.
