The Astoria Columbian says some little excitement was caused by the advent of Engineer Hurl hurt, of the Union Pacific, an I Al. Hammond, another well known civil engineer. Thy wore their high boots and looked travel stained, but as' to what their business was nothing could be learned. Mr. Hurlburt was "just looking around." It will be remembered that he was ''just looking around" Aftoria once before, when Henry Villard had under consi leration the cont ruc tion of a line from Hunter's point to Astoria. He made the survev down the river at that time for Mr. Villard. The engineers itne down the river in a boat. Astorian:- Very nearly a waste of time is the monthly, repot t of the Oregon State Weather Bureau, for it comes out so far behind time as to be practically worthless. The report for the month of July arrived yesterday, October 20th, but i.o good can be gained now from a erusal of an account of w hat the weather was latt July, and the pamphlet of thirty pages even though containing a great amount of information and numer ous statistical tables, is consigned to the waste-haBket. If II. E. Hayes, master of the state grange, w ho is director, and B. S. Pague, of the United Sta'es signal service, assistant director, can contrive to have these monthly reports issued about two months sooner, they may be of value, otherwise the vast amount of money it costs to publish them is Just about wasted. "Wants To Get Move on Her," Seattle Press : Some of the Ore gon papers are urging the propriety of a state appropriation of half a million dollars for the world's fair exhibit of the state's resources. The entire state press is a unit upon this important question. And they are moving in the right direction. Oregon wants to "get a move on her," in the expressive language of the street. If she doesn't at the next census Wash ington will show her a clean pair of heels. The legislature of this state will be asked for a liberal ap propriation not lib. a million; just cut in two once will be about the proper thing. Attention, Sir Knights. Shall th Leeitlatirs TaksAay Actios Upon the Hatter- The matter of railroad legisla tion, as it is called, will come be fore the next legislature in a prom form, and is a pertinent subject for consideration. Gov. Pennoyer'a course in the matter has unfortu nately given it a serni quoti politi cal tinge, but it should be wholly non-par: isan. A correspondent to the Salem Journal gives the sub ject a without gloves" handling. Hesfys: So far the railroad influence ex erted in the legislature, through their paid attorneys (whom they ' -"icceeded in electing to that inefficient all at- 'lon looking to the i. on railroads in OfBgw, . " It is truo we hive the Houltlaw, which is a goOj!t one as far as it goes. And we havt a railroad commision, which was created for the purpose of seeing that this Hoult law was obeyed bv the rail road manager, and also for super vising the traffic on the railroads and seeing that the roads were kept in repair and fit to serve the people with efficiency and safety. But so far the commission has been a failure for two reasons. 1st The law as framed was, through the machinations of Joe Simon and other railroad attorneys shorn of all efficient power by amendments to the original but. 2d Because the caucus at the last legislature was under the con trol of the railroad influence and selected commissioners who are controlled by the same influence and the rights of 6hippers are did- j regarded. ! J t is to be hoped that our next legislature will clothe the commis - i were who will not got go to the railroad magnates to know what action shou'd be taken. It would lie well also to provide for the election of the commission ers by the people. " W0MAH3' KIB3I0HABI SOCIETY.
