TARIFF ASD WOO LEX MILLS- Tjep teems to be the greatest divergence upon the question of the effect of the tariff upon the product of the sheep, than upon any other Vie of work in American industries. Why there should be any ques tion upon the subject, it is diffi cult to understand, for it is one o: the plainest and best understood questions involved, as it reaches the largest number a and is a prac tical application that any pro ducer can figure out for himself. Yet veiy many figure out as did a recent com spondent of a Cali fornia paper, who assorted that the most of the woolen factories in that state had to go under became of the n'flF; that the Pioneer Woolen Mi"s could not continue in existence under protection ; that a mill in Woodland, Yolo county, had to go out of business and sell its plant at a loss; that California wool is good for nothing but to manufacture shoddy out of, and that we must have imported Aus tralian wool to mix with it. The Chronicle hmted up the matter, and gives from a leUer rom a practical wo den mani, ric tarer of that s .te in reply to the assertions referred t, whicat may be summarised as folio .vs: The going out of bus-nets of the Pioneer mills had nothing to do with the tariff, s:ice those mills needed only California wool for the class of goods they made. The .Woodland mill did not go out ot business, for they never had started in business, the sub?t r p tions not having been filled by feveral t house 'id dollars. The Napa mills, the Fetoluma inillt and the liolden Gate mills, the Pelaluma ?nd Golden, Gate rn'lU have all increased tlieir capacity, and are trming fall time. The Knit Jose mi 'If, the Merced mills, the Stockton mills and the Marys vi le mills are tan:ng to their full rapacity and cannot supply the demand. - to the quality of California wool, our correspondent says wi have some of the best wc jl in tl e world, and the most desirable for manufacturing pur, ses in cver good quai;ty, inelnd-ng strength and elasticity of staple. It s ex cellent for lulling, is porous and will take the mcst delicate colors. It is line in staple, tli9 merino predominating, and is in all re spects excellent wool. This is the answer of the practi cal man to the theorist. It nerd no comment, unless it he to pay that tiiis is the usual result of free trade and protection discussions. The free trader is vei y dosrn.atie until the protcstioniat attacks him with the logic of facts , and then his defeat is twife rnd delations. It is a generally rc cognized fact that this is an ago of advertising, lot n certain youn-; women who i rapidly getting rich by writing novel which no careful parent knowingly permits to c nte i-ito his or her residence, is a point or two aht-ad of the rinartest actie s on the road in her methods fir obtaining free advertising. She came to Washington several, days ago and after writing her name on the regi ter of one the swell hotels she added in big round letters the word "novelut," w hich with two stroke oi in pen h encioscu in the blackest of biacket. ti ns nuking it tin nufc-t cvnepieimus thing of lie ttfge. The result of conrso was several pcraiaphs in the local papers meti'ioning th you ig woman and also, her novels. The World's fair Commissitn in one respect seem to have an adequate conception of the im portance of tlioir isitioti. Tln-t coniej'ticn rests in the fact that " . -i - aaa.aai tliey fully understand that it re quires a princely salary to main - tain the dignity of the oflicc-s, and no matter what a shortness there may be in the coin for the actual expenses of the exposition . the appropriation must be applied tu the salary business. Probably that anaii-cmi'iit will be lughlv satisfactory us the visitors to the exposition c.m look at the high paid olhcials it there is nothing else to see, sort of a "wax linger" show. Weat-iier prophet are plentiful in all localities. They are full fledged here as well as elsewhere and are already busy upon (he winter prediction. In the east they are .very active, and the Tribune says that the ever-engaging prophets who know jiint what sort of weather we are going to have reappeared. It is next winlrr tltaV naturally engages their attention. It 13 going to be cold, next Whiter is, sur.'. Crabs are plenty, and many crabs mean inuih bitter weather. One of the prophets was asked the other day what was the connection between crabs and a thermometer below- zero. He replied: "I never reason whkn I know a thing is so." Good for him ! We al ways like to see a prophet who has the courage of his predictions. The express coiuraii are said to be considering the question of increasing the rates upon freight carried by them. The particu'ar call for such an action it is hard to discover, for certainly the rates have been high enough all the time. Probably they take the action simply because they can. That kind of thing will not last always however. UOOD PI BE W.tTEK. Ike Ouly I'rrieet Way or I'urirjiiii; WaUrls by ibe fntirur Filirr. The most essential article to promote good health is good, pure water. It is t well known fact, of course, that no water, in its nat ural state, can le absolutely pure, but in cities it is impossible to get th natural waW that is even relatively pure. The only recourse then is to use artificial means to purify the water. A filter is the bi'st and only economical means of accomplishing this end. There is no question upon this point whatever, and our enterprising merchants, Messrs. Smith & Sen ders, deserve great credit for taking up the famous Pasteur filter, which is acknowledged to be ihe best in the world. Jts use .jives absolute purity of water. NEW TO-DAY.
