Long, a brother of the murdered man, walked up and fatally shot Van Dyke and then surrendered himselt. Skeleton Found. Racine. Wis.. Oct. 18. The skeleton of Ernest Schultcr. who disappeared mysteriously with his two children in March, 188, was fobnd buried in the cellar of his former home to-day. No trace of the bodies of ilie children has been found. It is believed the en tire family has been murdered and the bodies buried on tho premises. Instantly Killed. Chicago, Oct. 18. A. com-. in it tee of utizena met the body of Judge Miller at Burlington and conducted it to Keokuk, arriving hero at y o'clock. The honarary pall-bearers of the various com mittees took the body in cba g and were escorted by Company A, Second regiment, 1. N. (., ior rence post G. A. II., the Guard of Honor and several thousand citi zens. The body was borne to the Federal building, which had been elaborately draped in mourning. The casket was conveyed tj the court room in which th dead jus tice had recently presi ! I and placed upon a cataf ilq : j. The face of the beloved jurist was ex posal to view, and during fevera! hours, while the body lav in etate, it was viewed by several thousand people. W hen the funeral services were held both public and private build ings were draped in b aekand pre sented a sombre appearance. A high wind during the early morn ing destroyt d many decorations. All along the line of march over which the funeral jro-ession moved fias were displayed at half mast. Betides the distinguished men who accompanied the re mains from Washington, many others assembled here to pay their last tribute of respect. At 2 o'clock the funeral sei vice was held at the Unitarian church, of which the decease I has been a member. The church wa:? entirely inadequate to accommodate even a small part of the crowd. The funeral procession, headed by cler gymen, moved up the centre aisle, followed by pall-bearers bearing tho casket. In a few minutm the family entered with with Chiel Justice Fuller, members of the supreme court and various other le legations. There were many handsome floral tributes. The navy department to-day issued an ad vertisement inviting proposals lor the construction of a harbor de fense rain of 2050 ton, a torpedo boat of 112 tons, and a swift tor pedo cruiser of 750 tons. lhe secretary ol the nay re ceived a telegram from the Union Iron Works, of San Francisco, ac cepting the department's terms for the construction of one of the battle ships on the Pacific coast. Modern Surgery Achieves a Nota ble Triumph. Philadelphia, Oct. 18. Modern surgery achieved a notable triumph at the Philadelphia hospital.where a Ceasarian operation was per formed by Dr. Wm. Ashton, ob stetrician, -at the institution yes terday, and the case will go on record as a remarkable incident in science. The patient was a young colored woman oi robust health. Both the child and mother are ex pected to recover. Dr. Ashton finished the operation in the re nwkabTy short time' of twenty one minutes and thirty second-.. W. Cutler, editor and proprie tor of the Field and Farm, of this city, died at Salid.t this morning. Five Claims l'atentcd. The Otcgonian says: O. M. Idleinaa, who is interested in sev eral mining claims in the Bald Mountain district, in Clackamas countv, staled vesierdav that the property has been surveyed, under direction of the surveyor general, and that paten's for five claims were issued. The mines are said to contain good ore, some that was assayed panning out from $50 to $500 to the ton. The greatest ob stacle in the way of immediate development is inaccessibility. lhe mines are dithcult to get at aud it will require the expendituie of considerable money to give the transportation facilities nec ssary to extensive operations. Still, the owners are pegging away, suid in another year they expect to make a spurt in development work that will astonish the natives. A Shameful Practice. Some unscrupulous salmon deal ers about Portland are shipping consignments of "dog'' salmon, a most wort ii less heh. under the iMiisc of choice Oregon salmon. These fish are purchased at a low price bv equally unscrupulous deal ers in the east who sell them as genuine lordly Chinook. The prac tice threatens to bring Oregon salmon into bad repute in places where the business is carried on. The offenders should be caught and compelled to stop their shame ful traffic. Among Strangers. Mrs. T. W. Sampson, formerly Miss Lizzie Barger, of Eugene, died Wednesday last at Phoenix, Arizona. She was married to Mr. Sampson, August 30, 1S!H), and left the neqt day for Arizona, their future home. Soon after arriving there she was taken with a severe attack of pneumonia, from which she never recovered. She leaves a little daughter, aged five years, by her first marriaze, who will be brought to her grandparents in Eugene. We make a specialty of fine cakes for parties and weddings.
