She fell ou her face and died al most instantly. The only motive for tne distardly fiendish deed was that the young lady had very sensibly refused to marry him. In this case a crowd failed to catch and lynch the perpetrator of the deed before he was safely lodged behind the bare of the jail, which was fortunate. A hasty deatli would be no deterent punishment for that clw of criminals. Thev should be placed in solitary con finement for the rest of theii natural lives, and not allowed an; intercourse with their fellow-beings. CIS H B III The Canadians are not satis8ed with our new tariff bill. Perhaps they cannot be blamed for feeling in ton: manner. The bill undoubt edly will make a little hardship for them, but then it is the duty of our congress to legislate for ear country a d not for Caaadr. They can annex and then the effect will be for their benefit, also, as being citizens of the United States. It is very easy to comprehend the chat growling may be legitimate n the point of Canadians, but the diffii ult part is to understand how the citizt ns of this country who on an hiiibcot and full co - federation of the subject cannot help teing convinced that their ntwrest are enhanced by the passage of the law, can k ep up a xrowi merely because partisan nredileti. ns indicate such a course to t! fin. Thb transportation question is one of immense consequeace in the political and commercial ec n omy of nations. It is the import ant matte to coasider. Railroad enterprise and push baa h d a matked influence n lowering the true estimate of the value of water way couamunicatioi'. A change is however now taking placet in that matter. One of the marked and significant features of the industria. development of the day, not only in thia country but in Europe, is the revival of interest in artificial waterways. Canal development received a serious shock about forty or fifty years ago by the be ginning of the railway era; but after half a century's trial of rail roads both the scientific judgment and the, popular judgment have come to the voncluBion that land transportation can never be so cheap an water transportation, and ) aa a consequence there is now a greater activity than ever before in the proposal and prosecution of plana for artificial waterway and the improvement of river naviga tion. .The number and magnitude of these are very great. A Pitta bur R!er says that the other day at Pittsburg a commission received reporta of engineers concerning a proposed . canal to connect the waters of Lake Erie with those of the Allegheny River. In the river and - harbor bill, an appro priation of half a million dollars ia made to begin the construction of the Hennepin Canal, which will connect Lake Michigan with the Upper Mississippi. The same hill carries an appropriation of $350,000 for. the purchase by the govern ment of the Portage Lak canals, which aave to vessels navigating Lake Superior considerable round about travel. The same bill pro- j ridee $900,000 for the St. Mary's j Canal. In the cable dispatches i two or three days ago there was mention of a project now afoot which will make Paris a seaport - by means of a ship canal. Man chester, England, is now construct ing auch a canal at a cost of . $30, 000,000, and has it nearly com pleted. Other great canal works which are now in actual process of construction are the Kicarauga Canal, to connect the Atlantic and Pacific Oceana ; the Cape Cod Canal , to shorten navigation from Boston south ; the Harlem anal, to connect the Hudson and East Rivera ; the Colombia Canal, to give Columbia and the Broad River m water outlet to the sea at Charleston, S. C. Among those projected in thia country are a series, beginning with the Cape Cod canal, to secure unbroken inland water communication from Boston to Carolina sounds ; one across Florida, to shorten ocean ; Beg;t;s liver pills are a rafld laxative voyages ; one across lower M icing an una act directly on the liver and kW. .
