A young man named Roberts, a hop picker for Ed. Ives, near Ger aia, attempted to burn a corn from his toe by applying gun powder to it. As the powder did not go off as soon as he expected, be leaned forward to find out what was the matter, when suddenly the powder exploded, burning his face and eyes so i hat he cannot see. Mact'alav.m, ol tJcio, has been HlifTeriug for months with what wascalled consumption. He emaciated and suffered extremely. wd the action of the heart was re moved from the lett to the right aide. The doctor diagnosed the trouble as a collection of puss in 'he thoracic cavity, pushing the heart from its normal situation and inpinging upon and retarding the action of the lungs. The cavity was punctured, a tube inserted and a large quantity of puss wa drewn therefrom exactly at the lo cation of his diaunobis. The patient was relieved at once. Ad Ancient Veimel. Probably the oldest vessel in th world is now running on the Pa cific coast. This remarkable vess.'l, a fore and aft schooner oi about eighty tons register burden, called the igilant, is now and has lieen regularly running fiom Santa Cruz to St. Thoinrs and vise versa, as a passenger, height and mail packet, for upwaids of four-score years. The Vigilant, it is said, was built in Baltimore, Md., din ing the first years of our nation tl independence, making her up wards of 110 years old. She wat of the Baltimore clipper class, so famed many years ago for speed, and must have been a wonder and a beauty when launched. Astoria Columbian. Fire at North Yamhill. The McMinnville kep rter savt the barn of W. i. Sapiiinglin at North Yamhill was discovered on tire about two o'clock Monday morning. It was situated only twenty-tive feet from bis stort building and about tbiily feet frouo his dwelling, so that it is little less than a miracle thai they were not also consumed. The activity o) the citizens, who turned out so promptly, is doubtless all that saved I hem. The tire was proha bly the ork of an incendiary and is know n to have started in the loft where alxiut three tons of h u was stored. The bridge,' it is said, will be completed and opened ior tranic on about Wednesday 1.1 this week, and its opening will form an epoch in the prosperous growth of the city of Jefferson. Celebrated Shooting Case. Momkkai., Sept. 15. The cele brated case of C. C. Hale, of Cleve land, O., for bhooting and wound ing his brother-in-law. I' II. Cowles, in this city last June, whs called this morning. Hale pleaded guilty to aggravated assault and was lined 500, which he paid and the case emled.
