Preitfht A.2Spnt) 6.50 SUICIDES OF CHILDRES. Im the city of Berlin sixty-two children forty-six boys and sixteen iris have committed suicide since the 1st of January. Of this number. twenty-four had attained the age of 15, fourteen the age of 14, seven were only 12 years old. and one had not reached the age of 7. In most cases the immediate cause of the tragic act is unknown, but the suicides ae believed to have, been due to exceptional severely on the part of thowe in charge of the children, whether parents, teach T9 or xervanta. The discipline imposed upon German children is something of which American, vith their more liberal ideas of the domextic rela tions, have very little conception. The schools are as rigid in the en forcement of the r rules and regula tions aa a prison or reformatory in stitution could be; and at home a res ect and deference is exacted and exacted from chi'dren which would make , irreverent young America think the world was com ing to an end were it required of him. Servants, even, in some parts of Germrfny, are clothed with an authority over their young charges which is undreamed ot in th's rnf ry, and they sometimes i.rerciaeit with undue severity. May not th'S sterneas of control over children in Germany he traced to the spirit of roilitaiiuui which prevades thecounlr) ? The little New England boy who h.is to keep Sunday as though it were a day of mourning and .vho feels the stem parental control upon him until he grows ip or run? away, is, though he dues not know it, the innocent victim of the mili tary discipline which Cromwell enforced among his Roundheads 200 years ago and more; and it is at least possihle that the name thing is having its influence in German households. Certainly there mast be some powerful mov ing cause to have converted the jolly, fuu-.oving, genial and affec tionate German into a domestic tyrant; and unless such tyrann exists, how a we account for young children taking their lives into their own hands? The story is a pitiful one, what ever may be its cause. If the worst use to which a man can be put is to, kill him, how iniiniteh worse it is to think of little children in such a state of desperation and unhappiness aa to drive them to suicide? The German Emperor is nearly all-powerful ; let him look into this and take measure to remove the reproach which has come upon his capital. Ex. The Alabama train-robber who, single handed, robbed the express car, proved that he wn an expert in the dangerous business. His scheme of deceiving the express messenger is origins.1, and will probably be imitated by other knights of the road. If this busi ness increases as it has increased during the, last few months we may expect to see a manual of train robbing with full directions for the guidance of amateurs and novices. Ohio has a surplus of ambitious statesmen, so that the retirement of Senator Sherman would be a godsend to the younger men who aspire to high political honors. It is very doubtful, however, whether the reports of Sherman's intended withdrawal freiu pulilic life are correct. The Shermans come of vigorous stock and the Senator is not the kind of man who willingly gives up service in which he has shown great ability. Tub trouble in Central America between Salvador and Guatemala, which hai placed Gen. Mizner in a rather trying position, has started the question of returning to the old system of sending a minister to each government in that tem pestuous portion of the globe and not accrediting one uiiniater to the fine different republfrg, a situa tion very otten like present one when the mini iter ! must confer with oo belligerent nationalities, and Te't in th tire between them, if the pn-sent system is maintained. 1'in-le Sam may find it hard to find any one who will accept the situation. Athens, Gkekce, now bios's uf possessing the largest electric-light plant in Eastern Europe. A cen tral station 'ias recently been es tablished there containing two l-'iO horse-power engines, and fom smaller ones of IVi horse-power each, and -ight dynamos, four of which have a capacity of 5-"0 am pere eaeh, two ot :!t , and two of 240, ftGov. Ferry, of Wasliit gton, was not pleased with the tr-'atment ac corded him by the legislature in the matter of the census returns and theie is likely to be a feeling not altogether harmonious. The house wanted them before they were prepared, and Governor took it? demand aa a court ny. mark of d;s- WifiTK women and white men are to he allowed to vote in Mis dissippi under the new Constitu tion of the St .tte. But in the future, aa in the past, the hlaek people of Mississippi w ill doiihileHS do tiie liest they ran for their health hy taking to the w;oIh on election day.
