Preibt UNSATISFIED MAN. Thk glamours of romance and un certainty hai attractions for human beings that apparently cannot be withstood. No matter what tht results may be no matter how much disaster ueath, suffer ing and hardships former projec tors and explorers may have en dured, new men stand ready to undertake the sam line of work, if the required uncertainty of re sults is as attractive as ever. Take for instance the Arctic ex ploring fields, which are marked with so many bleaching skeletons, and the graves of -o many noble ambit ous men, and they still hold a fascination for human beings that attaui ks new victims each re curring season. It is said that the disasters of the De Long expedition in 1831 and of the (Jreely expedition in 1882 have until recently dincoiir aged adventure in the Arctic rei"". Dr. Nansen's journey at-rmss Greenland last year was tlu first indication of a revival in the exploring spirit. His success in that expedition encouraged the young Swede, unfortunately, to the bolder undertaking of pene trating to the pole, and he will ne : :ng start on his journey, t ki ig the route attempted by De Long with such lamentable re sults. Meanwhile another Arctic adventure will be in progress on the east coast of Greenland. Lieu tenant Ryder, of the Danish navy, who is well known for his admir able survey of the west coast of Greenland, will next year, under the auspices of the Danish Gov ernment, study and survey the east coast between With and 73d degrees north latitude. Mast of that coast is practically unknown, owing to its inhospitable haunter. It will not enter into Lieutenant Kyder'a plan to make a record of near approach to the pole. As long ago as 1670 land was seen tar tt the north of the lieiitrm nt's proposed field of operations. The German north pole expedition of 186-'70 surveyed the east coast of Greenland as far north as Cae Bismarck a point much nearer the pole than Lieutenant Ryder proposes to reach. The unknown region to be studied by the Ryder expedition extends from Frantz Josef Fiord southward to Cae Brewster, on the 73th parallel of north latitude. Scoroby, in .82- while hunting the walrus, made a rough map of the outer portion of his coast line, but he did not push into the deep fiords between Kcoresby Sound and Franz Josef Fiord. The more southern portion of Lieutenant Ryder's field of operations has been oftener visited but no tolerably accurate map of it exists. Coal ha been f.rtind there, with excellent clays, sand stones, etc., to say nothing of such game as the white bear. reiu!eer, musk ox, hare, and snow fowls. At Cape Stewart a house will, if possible, be erected as a starting point for expeditions in all directions. One of the objects to be had in view is to determine whether there is a connection be tween Davy's Sound and Franz Josef Fiord. Another is to ascer tain whether, as has been sup posed, there is an isolated tribe oi Eskimos inhabiting this region. Eskimos were found there by Clavering, but at the time of the German expedition they had dis appeared. The Ryder expedition will consist of nine persons. They will be equipped with three boats, twenty-two feet long and six feet wide, and an ample mpply of sledr tents, snow-shoes, besides materia i for a house and observatory. It will leave Copenhagen in June, 1891, and will be on the Green!an.i coast for two years if it has good uck. If it has bad luck the rule, apparently, in Arctic expeditions three or four years may pass be fore the members of the ex pedition can expect to see their homes. Should the exjtditiou accomplish nil iis hope?, it will, od its return, show the world an outline map o Greenland com plete, ext-ep? as repecta its sno poaed northeastern corner. Balti more Sun. TiitRE is one great end that will he achieved, by the impetus and rivalry given to ship building, in the construction of the cruiser for the navy, that have lately leen built That is the superiority at tained by our shipyards and hops in the construction and handling of large and perfected machinery. As has been truly said the building of a new navy is stimulating the mechanical genius of the Ameri can people. We hr.ve already seen that ships can be built in the American yards which com pare in point of. speed favorably with the best specimens of Old World rkill. Now in the national gun shop at Washington we ate afforded the spectacle of a travel ing crane, the largest in the world, a piece of machinery which (.irks up a mass of metal weighing 100 tons anl transports it to and fio in a large shop with perfect ease. The familiarity we are gaining with big intchiuery and the other things we are forced to learn while building war ships will be hound to give us a pre-eminence in ship building for commercial purposes. It was England's policy of creating a great armor-clad navy which gave such an impetus to shipbuild ing in that country, an. I the game results will be w itnessed lu re. John L. Sullivan reached a wise conclusion when lie uecidetl that there is more money in acting than in fighting. In lact, there is more money in shoveling sand lUan slogging, but there in alto more work in it, and work is a hat the professional pug.hst detests, with the present strong feeling against the brutality of prize ugiit the outlook lor toe titisiuess is very gloomy.
