OKEiJON PACIFIC TIM K TABLE. Arrives Departs J VSamU.OO p m Passenger. eiirht . 5.2Spml CfiOa STEAMSHIP BUILDyO. j tlie Pacific Mail Steamship Company had its fast ocean st am er, the China, built in Great Brit ain instead of the United States, the motive wasdoul tless economy. The idea was general that the Fng lish shipyards could turn out much cheaper steamers than our yards, and that the advantage was all with the English builders. The Chi a, howewr, is evidently not the success that was anticipat ed. She is a fast vessel it is true but her speed is attained at the cost of an enormous consumption of coal, fhe burns nearly tice as ninch as the American-built steamer, the City of Peking, and is only a very little faster and nan not the freight carrying capacity of the Peking, besides requiring a much larger crew to handle her. The China veiiiie and illustrates the testimony given by Cramp, the Philadelphia shipbuilder, before a com :ittee of congress on the ques tion the comparative cost and merits of American and English steamships. Cramp declared that he could build iron or steel ship just as cheaply as they are built in Great Britain by building the same kind of vessels, but he rail he wonl 1 not build such ship for :.. ; a jua first because he vnjii'd not imperil his reputation by that kind of work, and. second, American steamship owners would not have uch vessels. It is the pet idea uf the English shipbuilder, apparently, to make his eteamships as ugly in appear ance as possible, but this in not the worst feature of them. He is apt to make them deficient in structural strength in his anxiety to build them cheaply for unless he can put his figures very low some other builder will underbid him. We do not want any such ocean steamers built in the United States. We int-ist that our vessels shall be handsome as well as staunch, swift and commodious. If we want beautv in marine architecture as we certainly do we must ex pect to pay for it ; and if we com bine beauty with sujieriorty in strength and 8eed, it is not strange that our ships co-t a little more than the English-built vessels. DOUBTS ABOUT POPULA T10S CoMMIHMONEB PORTKR affirms. according to Washington dis patches, that the population of the United States, as enumerated by subordinate', amounts to only sixty-four . millions. But this shows an increase of less than 3d per cent during the last decade. To those who give little attention to the sources of increase this may not seem surprising , but reflections suffice to indicate th.it the result means something not very encour aging. . The immigration within the lat ten years Ins been more than hull the entire immigration during the lat thirty years; that is, from LStiO to IS80 the immigration had been 5,191,477, but from 18S0 to 18!X it has ben 5,J42,b29. The fact i? that Canadian s'atesmen sp-ak with great feeling of the - iieavv lose of Canad by migration to tin? country, and in one year the move ment was officially reported a abut 100,000. No general pestilence ha devas tated the country during the laM decade, and it would lie startling indeed to be compelled to believe that in the fare of what civilization, progress and science have done, the death rate has advanced. In view of these facts there is no other alterna'ive than to be lieve that the census of 1800 is untrustworthy, or that the census of 1880 was excesive, and with all . -the faults of the census ot 1880 it has been considered very accurate as to the erumeratioti of the pop nlation of the country at that time. The San Francis o Examiner fays that it is well th-it t)ie Char leston cume back, even if there is no immediate necessity for her presence in the Bi-hring sea. She is in eui'h a condition that she needs attention at Mare Island. That her bottom should become po foul only four months after dock ing to reduce her speed to (-even knots is a nearly conclusive argu ment against the policy of huilding steel hulls without any protection against marine growths It would be impossible in war time to dock a cruiser three times a year. A sheathed ship mieht make half a knot less than uuheathed one on her trial trip, but a vessel that " r """.r...u i. i l cuuiu mane eigniee kim'is aim a t,-ir ii i.i i i. iiaii an me iiuiv vuuiu wuiiu considerably more in actual use than one with a record of nineteen and an everyday performance of seven. Hop grow rs will make a snn' amount of nionev this year. Crops and prices are both good. The harvest in Oregon is nearly over.
