two bills, however, the passage of
which would do much to insure
the business prosperity of the
country, viz., the Tonnage bill
and the Tariff bill. The Tariff bill
affects almost everv branch of in
dustry. Manufacturers are unable
to make their contracts for supplies
many of which are drawn from
distant points and even foreign
countries. They are in the dark
as to what markets they will be

dollai bills it takes to weigh as
much as a $20 gold piece ? Driv
ing out to White Bear recently one
of those walking compendiuras of
useful information sprung the
above query, and the opinions
that it elicited show a remarkable
ransre. One member of the party
whose husinessit is to handle
money in large sums, after pro
found thought suggested that the
number would be from 1000-to 1200.
Others guessed down the line to
500, bnt no one less than that
number. After all had placed
themselves on record, the compen
dium stated that the number of
bills was 30 or 31. according to
their condition as to dirtiness and

A Heal Child ofth Ragimant.
Was graduated last month from
the Alexander-Varien institute in
Warsaw. Her name is Marie Keks-
n lm and her age is just 16 years.
In the lant Turkish war she was
picked up from the ruins of a burn
ed and deserted town by the colonel
of the Russian grenadier regiment
of the emperor of Kussia. The
members of the regiment voted, as
soon as they went into camp, to
support and educate the little
Turkish girl at their expense.
They contributed enough immedi
ately to set their plan in operation
and have continued ever since to
buy their ward all that she desired.
Five weeks ago they decided to
give her a haiulsotue dowry when
she should he ready to marry.
Marie has a beautiful face and a
keen mind, and it is expected that
she will get her husband from the
regiment that adopted her.
