Sow that congress, through the timulut of the president's mes uge' upoo the subject, is working ilviw tle plan to thoroughly atop the Louiinjt lottery iraud, by denying it the iwe of the United State tuails, the subject has ' re ceTl an accelerated discussion in tue prvinineat papers oi the land. Almost without exception the papers irrespective of party linen, heartily cummend President fclar riaoain, the cotiraeheluas pursued. The New Yerk. Wond, the leading democratic paper of the country ays: '"he president is rigltt in as suming as he tloee in his lotteiy message that there can be no prov'uiion oi sentiment among honest men as to the desirability of completely closing the mails to tue Louisiana Lottery Company, but it is. not easy to understand how anything of the kind is tu be done. The department can stop the transmission of circulars and advertisements of lotteries, it may be legally empowered, if it is uw so empowered already, to stop the delivery of letters addressed to a lottery uosapany, precisely as it Stops letters addressed to green goods men and other BWindlerb. But the remittances aud other im portant csrrespouueiice of the lot tery company do not pass through that malls aidresnit to the com pany, and none' of its letters need lo so. It has ooe or two bank in its service, and letters of remitt ance are usually addressed to iheui. Being sealed, ther-e letters can not be distinguished tram the other correspondence of the banks, and it is not easy to see how the department ca be enabled by any bill which congress can pass to make an effectual closure of the mails to the lottery, unless the dangerous power be given to pout masters to open sealed letters up on suspicion that they relate to lottery business. That, of course, is not to be thought of unless we mean to open wide the dour to government espionage of private correspondence, which of course we. do not mean and never shall." The New York Press, a republi can paper expresses the opinion that "President Harrison's at titude toward lotteries is com mended by the press of the country with greater unanimity than any thing ebe he has done. Theiiscont tight of the Louisiana Lottery for life in its own state has roused the country to the evil of these, gambling establishments. inetr pernicious influence runs every community that is reached by the mails. The existence of the principle agency of the (Louis iana Lottery in the District of Columbia may well suggest to the president to inquire whether he has not the power in his own hands to drive out . such an illegal establishment. If the guardians of the peace neglect to do their duty, why not remove them and appoint others who will do their duty ? The country will stand by the president in an effort to clear uut the Washington lottery estab lishment." The New Orleans Times-Iemo crat, however, has it eyes so nxed upon the million and a quarter of dollars that the lottery schemers piopoae to put in the treasury of the state of Louisiana that it cannot see anything else, and it rights for the lottery with all the vim it possesses. One other paper, the Galveston News, is so filled with the parti san zeal that imbues it with the spirit that can distinguish no good to come out of Nazareth, that it records its voice in favor of the lottery simply because a republi can president recommends its sup pression. Some few other aeein to bo actuated by a like motive, but the majority heartily favor the action, s fact that is indicative of a better state of aflairs in the iuture. The strike on the New York Central railroad, like its prede cessors in that line, turns out an ignominious failure A calm and dispassionate review of what has been accomplished by the strikes, up to this time, will canvince any thinking person that they almost inevitably fail in accomplishing good results. It does seem as if better methods might be adopted and the misery and suffering caused by the strikes be averted, and some adequate reforms brought about.
