Already, only a few years autr our first century of National life, we have cities that are larger than those of any other country ' that has anything like our ,popu lation. Against Russia's 70,000,- 000 of people we have put 64,000,-1 000 ; hut against St. Petersburg's 900,000 and Moscow's 500,000 we can put New York's 1,600,000, Philadelphia's and Chicago's 1,000,000 each. France, with the second city of the glote, has but that one that can match either of these three hives of population. England ha but one London. Germany and Austria have only their capitals that can come near the million mark. Even o d Japan has but one city, Tokio, that has more inhabitants! than any one of there three young American cities. Tokio has a population somewhat trrpater than New York, or about 1,700,000. Only China equals the; United States. That ancient em pire, of 400,000,000 souls, has not more than three cities of more than a million each. It is often denied that the 'celestial empire has more than one such city, but it is almost conclusive that it has three. The growth of the city in America is wonderful. What a miifhtv citv will that "greater New York" be when Brooklyn's 800,000 and 200,000 more be added to the 1.6000.000, and tlie city has added to tuis number the tremen dous growth of 33 per cent, every decade for a half-century ! It will be larger than that world of Lon don And in the West will be Chicago with her t.o or three millions. Further West will be San Francisco with two millions. In the central States Philadelphia will have 'er two millions. St. Louis will have more than a million and a half, aud Baltimore and Washington will have each a millio.n Either Alanta, Chatta nooga or Birmingham will be the great metropolis of the central South and have a million. New OrWnfl will have her million as the great mart of the Gulf coa-t and Central and South America and Mexico, and Iallas or Kort Worth will become a city of a million souls. Here are, say, a dozen cities that within a genera tion will have over a million each. In other words, a child or young person of this generation may to see in this country twelve cities with an average population of 2,000,000. skilful. Unless something unfor. seen occurs to Ezeta he will fore recognition of his Presidency, for Barrillas is so unpopular that he cannot count upon raising an army large enough to crush Sal vador, while Honduras is not to be depended upon in any emer gency. Mtanlov'a rtredictiou. that in five years, there would not be a believer of the Mohammedan reliirion south of ttw equater in Africa, is emphatic but can hardly be accepted as sure of fulllillment, providing there is any truth in statements that have been made in regard to the hold that the religion ot Mahomet had gained in the dark continent. Five years will not suftVe to wipe it all out, but there are probably much more difficult problems to solve than than the religion of the people of that region. The South American, editors, especially in the Argentine repul) lic, have no need to bother about gathering the news, for they are only allowed to publish such matters as have undergone a gov ernment inspection very meagre reports indeed. tmniAft w W W. It is reported that Emperor William has received a mysterious warning to be careful of himself, on his visit to Russia, and to avoid aa much as possible to close con tact with the czar. The unknown writer of the warning says the emperor has begun his reign in a satisfactory manner, and that there is a purpose to ive him a fair chance to prove bimnelf a man of the oeoole : but that the czar lias condemned himself by his own acts. 0.ueen Victoria is repre sented to be much alarmed about th matter, and to view her grand eon's proposed visit to Russia with many misgivings, whirh, however, the emperor does not share. Out of delicacy toward German sentiment, the Viborg regiment, of tbe Russian army, which is under the honorary command of the kaiser, will not take part in the sham battles, which will form a part of the entertainment during ' the kaiser's visit .
