It is pretty definitely settled that the Coos Bay x Kosehurg railroad will be built from Marahtield east ward, and completed by December 31. 1891, so that Koaeburgers anu Marshfielders can exchange visits on New Year's day. 1892. The salmon season just closed on the lower Columbia shows the largeat pack of any year since 1886, and has only been exceeded by the pack of the eleven seasons from 1876 to 1885 inclusive. The latest figures show that 436,000 cases, valued at $2,620,000 at present prices, have been put up this season. The salary fixed for the laud tffices for Oregon for the ensuing vear is aa follows: La Grande, $2743.20; Lakeview, $2812.72; Or egon City and Roseburg, $3000 each; The Dalles, $3212.50. The office ;t Burns, which has been doing business only a little over six months has earned enough to brinn the salary to $2240.70. Greenbaum. the young man who was lost in the Olympic mountains and wandered four days without food excepting wild blackberries, had a very narrow escape. He wandered away f'Otn camo after a deer he had. wounded and ii the excitement of the chase did not realize how far he was traveling. Under the excitement of a hunter's fever one is not aware of the amount of exertion he puts forth. New Lake Diitcorered. Capt. M. W. Hunt and the party he accompani -d on the trip in the Cascades, reiuuied last evening aud report a most delightful trip. Among other experiences they dis covered a beautiful little lake in trie mountains, of which they had never heard before and conse quently consider it a new find. The party christened it Bowman lake, in honor of one of their numlier. Salem Journal. A Lively tbaac. Yesterday uiorning a lively chase occurred in front of Mueller & Garrett's on account of a farmer losing the bottom out of a coop of fine spring chickens, scattering them all over the street. But for the prompt action of the clerks and assistance of the fleet-footed farmer they would have o-caped, being nicely dressed and placed on ice for your Sunday's dinner. Don't fail to leave an early order. The Santlam Mine. Mes-rs. W. F. Read, C. E. 1-rownell and W. H. Bingham, re turned yesterday from a trip to the mines of the Albany Mining & Milling Company in the Ijuartz ville district on the Santiam. i They went up to arrange for put ting in the machinery to work the mines. The engine, boiler and one of the rock crushers ia already on the ground. The machinery will be put in place as soon as pos aible. The ore taken out by the men now at work is the richest ever found in that dii-triet, and is free gold-hearing q'.artz of a semi decompoaed type. Rainwater, who was one of the early pioneers of Oregon, died at his home across the river from this city on the 7th inat., aged 70 years. He bad been ill for several weeks with typhoid pneumonia. The deceased i-aine to Aliiany in 1847, and settled on the iarin which had leen his home up to the time oi his death. The funeral will occur Irom the resi dence at 1 o'clock to-day.
