It can be placed anywhere on a large or small stream, where there is a tolerable current. The visit cf these gen tlemen to this coast is one of great importance, for they will be able to see with their own eyes some thing of our own valleys, bills and mountains that must be seen t be appreciated, and can only be understood by tne people of our distant Eastern states when viewed in person. baiem gave tnera a least ot truits and watermelons and a right cor dial reception, commensurate with the importance ot the capital ot our strife. Many of the citizens of Albany were at the depot to greet them as they passed through, but through lacs oi concert oi action no uib play was made. They were a jolly crowd and seemed to be highly enjoying themselves. rrmrly mt The Statesman has the following concerning a man formerly known to many in this county: "A tel egram from Colfax, Wash., under the date of July 30th. is concern ing a young man who ased to live in Marion countv. Benjamin Blomon, the murderer of Thomas Glick in Colfax last December, was sentenced by Judge Ruby this afternoon to twenty years in the Walla Walla penitentiary and $1000 fine. Blanton made a ram bling statement to the court, at tempting to condone the crime and was very nervous. The sher iff takes him to prison to-night. He is broken down in health and will never live oat the sentence. Blanton was convicted in the su perior court, soon atter the mur der, of murder in the first degree and sentenced to hang March 28th last, ine supreme curt reviewed the decision and ordered that he be sentenced for manslaughter on ly. as the indictment was defective for murder in the firtdrgree. He was given the full penalty tor this degree." A Bleat Strike. G. The crew .of the south-bound passenger train mat arnveu m Ashland Tuesday.morning had an experience witn two or mree tramps who seeiii to have been visiting m the neighborhood ot a "gall" factory lately. When the train stopped at Grant's Pass the hobos were put on ana toiarostay, but they "would, inst . like to see the brakeman that could keep them from riding if they wanted to" and they were on the platform again when" the train pulled out. As the train was getting out into the suburbs of town, one of the brakeman who had thus ' far been able to induce one of the tramps to climb off, pulled the bell rope and stopped the train, at the same time giving nis irampsmp a uu that landed him on terra firms. Starting again Engineer McCarthy next became the object of the tramps' wrath and theycom? menced hnng stones . into the can, nakmg it decidedly dangerous for the engineer and fireman tor a while. This was more than "Mc" would stand so he stopped the train, left the engine in charge of the fireman a few minutes and went hobo chasing. It is reported that "Mc" found a shot-gun at a house not very far away, for a man answering the description of one of these tramps called on a sur geon at Grant's Pass shortly after the affair happened and asked to have a- few snots extracted from the calf of his leg, remarking at the same time that the hardest crew to "work" that he ever struck was on that train 16. These fellows probably will not attempt to run a train on this division again very soon. Tidings., , Insane From a Dos; Bite. Frank Kissinger, well known on Fall creek where his father John Kissinger resides, had a horrible experience a short time since that may result fatally or cause.; a per manent loss of reason. He was engaged herd irg sheep near Pilot Rock in Umatilla county, and on Thursday of last week while play ing with his dog, a very intelligent sheep dog, it snapped and caught one of his hands ; in endeavoring to free the hand his other was caught and bitten through the thumb, iben be fainted, and from that time, about 11 o'clock in the fore noon, he knew nothing until 4 o'clock when he regained his senses ami found his hand still fast in the mouth of the dog which was dead. The day was extremely warm and flies had blown the wounds made. With a butcher knife be pried open the mouth of the dog and released the hand. He left the sheep and went to the home of his employer -who pro cured a physician and dressed the wounds, but shortly after he be came violently insane, and was taken to Pendleton four men be ing required to restrain him. He was committed to the asylum at Salem and is now confined there in... The superintendent given hopes that he will soon recover hit reason. The dog had not previous ly or at the time shown any symptoms of madnesH, and it is thougi't that he had been poisoned by strychnine as the poison had been put out in that vicinity. Eugene Guard. Coating- te Oregon. Mr. W. L. Dalton, of Dallas, who several weeks ago went on a visit to the East, has returned, bringing with bim thirteen families, who have settled in Inde pendence and Dallas. Many im migrants are now on the way to Oregon, and this fall there will be a larger exodus from Missouri and Iowa. The poorness of crops caused by droughts, and alarming freqnency of cyclones, cause them to come to a land which rejoices in never failing crops, which nature has provided with ever lasting hills' and green forests, both' to minister to man's love for beauty and to enable him to reap the haivest of industry. Farmers of Orego" have cause to feel in good spirits this year. The wheat crop is heavy and the prices are advancing. A -grain dealer of this city said yesterday that the wheat of Linn county is of as good quality as ever har vested. The grain is plump and is free from wild oats or weeds. The price in this city is 64 cen's. A small choice lot sold the first of the week for 69 cents.
