This afternoon when tbe works closed he left the foundry, and seeing a number of strike-s grouped near, he crossed the street to a policeman and asked - protection, saying be was afraid - of being assaulted The ' policeman told eum to get on a car and be would keep the strikers away. Just, after he got on the policeman beckoned bim to get off, and be did so. Tbe policeman told him that a number of strikers had gone around to intercept tbe car at (he next blok. He then went a couple of blocks and boarded a Powell street car, think ing himself safe from pursuit, and being very sleepy he leaned back and began to doxe. Soon two mm hoarded tbe car: one named H. Wheat and oats are turning out better than expected, most of the wheat yielding 30 to 40 bushels to the acre. The buil.ling. containing 149 cells, is occupied bv 1831 prisoners, or over twelve to each cell. I he prisoners are sent there to be confined from one to ten years, but se great is their suffering from the barbaritv of keepers ami total disregard of sanitary lawn, tha' one rarely lasts five years. The greater number are stark naked and w re chained by the ankles and wrists. Thre were also underground cells for the worst prisoners in order to force confession.
