The progress of the times brings in very material and multitudinous changes. Among the most marked of these are those in the motive power line produced by the trans mission of power by the means of electricity. The Ape of teel says f nat the census of 1880 placed the numher of water wheels operating as motive power in the United States at 54.404. This tally repre sented a total of 1,225,37! horse power. The later association of water power with electric motors has developed a source of foice that is destined to be of eminent service in industrial life. The .distribution ot this new energy by means of wires and motors over areas tributary toour water courses will add a new chapter to the story of industrial development. It ha.-' been computed on the best data obtainable that the rivers and streams of thia country! averazed throughout tl. vAr " J xuj, tiw, uuii norse power Th electric utilization of this powei opens afield of magnificent oj'por- j tuxutiee. . lfi Aiaeara ntoiet-t ial ir mjraanAl. .i in Correspondence With the posm- Diiiueff oi tnisi new energy in motive power. In Kocheater, Kearney and Spokane Falls ve Lave practical examples of its uae. The lowest falls of the Genewee Ri ver are utilized by the Rochester Brash Electric Light Company, and it has 500 motors already in active service. It furnishes power "to 108 tailor shops, charging all the rate of $18 per annum lor one eighth home power Fan motors are kept in continual motion from June 1st to October 1st lor 15. For 25 cents a day a small manu facturer or storekeeper has one horse power at his service, with no trouble or car of his ow n. Its work is steady and continuous, and its easy command in small units at a nom-nal cost ill make its use general and probably work some important . changes in our industrial facilities. The rate for two horse power is $120 per annum ; $50 for five ; $300 for b.x ; $400 for eight; $475 for ten, and $700 tor fif een. The power a- plied at these rates is economical and steady, and involves no atten tion beyond the closing of a nwitch, and that the work of a second. It can be carried any distance in large or small quantities. The ordinance department of the National government is construc ting a dam at Rock Island, 111., in which some forty-tine wheels, con . necked with dynamos, will tarry the electric current to motors dis tributed in its various depart ments. The Des Moines rapids at -Keokuk will furnish 00,000 boise power with the necessary machin ery and appliance. There ib practically no i-omputahle limit to the possibilities of this motive power, and its development will in time change many of the old and cumberson conditions of our varied industiies. Tub extreme of cruelty seems to have been reached in the case of the murderer Kemmler, who has so long been made the buffet of the fight over the execution by electricity in th state of New York. The Tribune says a curious t story about Kemmler comes from Syracuse. The stolidity with which be has borne himself here to fore, even during the time wh n he was within a lew hour of death without any hope of postponement, , sincM he was not aware of the ap plication to the supreme court oi the United states in his behalf until after it was made this stolidity and apparently complete indifference to hi situation have, it '.appears, departed, ' and the murderer is dejected and broken . down. Thin is a singular phe nomenon assuming that the story ii correct. The execution of . vKemflaler byfelectricity is set for next week, but as he has once al ready been considerably nearer ha fatal chair than at present, it would be natural to expect biu to be fortified by his previous experi ence. Long contemplati n o' death in the fo-"i . in which it awaits him seems, however, ,to have touched even such dull sensi bilities aa those of this brutal murderer. It would have baen humane to allow the execution to proceed when, the mysterious in fluence that souitht the ultimate appeal intervened to arrest it.. . The President has ordered a new count for both cities of St. Paul and Minneapolis, and it is to be hoped that the final labors of the census enumerators in those cities will end their bitter quarrel and and satisfy both of them. They have evinced a wonuJCfuL. flight of e5 "y in their bickerings, that w .la nave peen much better ex pended in advancing their . mater ial interests. Mas. Stanley is to have the houor of having ber picture adorn the labels of an enterprising soap manufacturer. Fame comes to some people, is . thrust upon others and still others earn by dint Mi Y14'01 -endeavor. Mrs. Stanley will probably be puzzled to ascertain how she fell beir to so much genuine fame in the soap ado line. Even in Ohio the deptersion in the value of agricultural lands is no(ed, it beings in such a marked degree as to be perceivable. The fact is causing an earnest inquiry as to the cause, and a prevention and cure if possible. Bargains. Four choice lots on Fifth street at $625 each.'
