Thsy Ars Hsla on a Charge of Selling Liquor ta HulfBrd IidUa. oung Dowd, the half-breed Indian, who was recently fined by Judtte Deady in the United states district court for taking liquor up on the Siletz reservation, has paid his tine, and in addition has en tered information against three men whom he charges with having old liquor to him. The parties are all residents of Dallas, Polk county, ami twoof them have been arrested and taken to Portland. One of them is ilale Backensto, a saloon man of Dallas formerly oi Albany of wh im D wd si8 he bjiight a pint of whisky and a ulass of beer on the 16tli of July, the ame day on which he claims t have liought a bottle of alcohol irom James Wilson, the non of A. Young Wilcon and Backets'o were taken to Portland and ,-aturd ly tiiey were given an examination in a Unied States commissioners' court. Diwd swore positively thac he bought whisky from Backensto lat Fi iuay just a'ter getting into Dallas, he went to the defendant's saloon and had a glas9 of beer. Backensto was held in bonds fixed at $100 to wait the grand jury. The informant looks bo much like a fuilblooded white man that he could undoubtedly procure liquor from any saloon. Baeken do s'ated in court that while he did uot remembei selling him whisky, he would have done ho, not sus;ectiug the boy had any Indian blood in his veins. Dowd says his father is an Irishman, but that his mother is a squaw, and as he is in charge of the Siletz res ervation, he is legally a full Indian. Suk Mountain In CoMt Rang-, Kosehurf I'laindealer. Th theory of the discoveries is that the mountain was located over v.wt cave and the weight of the heavy snows last a inter crushed it in. The n.ise made y the .inking mass of lock- and tlr it and trees was heard several mile away, but tne parties did not know until recently what caused it. The lake can not be shown in corroboration of this story as it has disappeared, but the hole is there with the mountain in itann may be viewed by doubtingThom- iees, who will tak the trouble to visii it. Thinking probably you would like a few items from the Bohemia district, I decided to write to the Herald. Iu the first pi t e Bo hemia has never been written Up, nor am 1 able myself, to tiive the d strict j net ice, but nevertheless, as still as matters have been kep', we certainly have the finest ' and richest mining district on the coast. This is saying a good deal, but nevertheless, I know whereof I speak. I h ve had now ten years experience on the great belt of mineral from Mount Kain ier in the state of Washington to (told Hill in Southern Oregon. I find in the Bohemia District the true fissure veins, both rich in gold and silver. We are running a lead there and we have taken out free gold lor a I s'auce of 50 K)feei. We have quart that will make all the way from $10 to $20,000 to the ton. I have one piece about the size of a hen's egg which contains lacking two penny weight of $18; we have inany thers nearly as rich. The for. na tion is granite and porpkery, strongly pn-guated with silica, which is true quartz. There are a great many vis. ing the camp and we iiave parties Irom all over the coast and several line experts acting in the interests of New York and San t rancisco f ndicatt-B. tVe will have some of those fine loads oned up as soon as time permits. 1 will say this right here, it is useles for a man to run in and locate and gooiu, esecially without means to give a showing. We have had too niucn of th t a ready ; I believe that to he the case n ad new camps. A number of prominent Albany men are iuti rt-B'ed iu the lioloen Star ledge, in the oistrn t, w hich is certainly rich. The di-tance is 36 miles from Cres-vell. Men of even moderate means who nit-an business will do well in this dis trict. G. P. MlLLE The Kefnrm School Contract. Oregonian savs: D.
