"8tcco is a word frequently up on the lips, but not always used with discrimination. It is often confused with the mere zrati6ca tion of wishes, or the possession of something in itself desirable; whereas it sonld be confined t" the prosperous results of our own efforts. A youth at school or college gains a prize for the best essay in his class. But if some one else has written it for him, can we consider him a successful competitor? A young man craves wealth, and suddenly, by the death of a relative, he finds him self rich; but is thin the success that he would have earned had he by hi9 own industry and energy, gained the much coveted posses sion? 'Another through the in terest of his friends, or through bribery, gains a place and position of honor for which he has nevet fitted himself ; he has obtained seeming success, hut is it the tnv one which talent and power an patient endeavor would hav. earned? This difference is not one of mere words. Success is something which every one wants and hopes for, naturally and rightly, for it is to a great degree the measure of bis life happiness, and his value to the whole world. For this reason, it is of great im portance that it be distinctly un derstood in what it consists, and - how it must be secured. 1'f there is a vague notion that it means any and every pleasant thing that we may desire, procured by what ever means are at hand, and with as little personal effort as mav be, energy add endeavor will be at a discount. They will only come in as a last resort, when all easier methods have failed ; and thus the noblest element of manhooti and womanhood will remain compara tively undeveloped. But if, on the other hand, success is under stood to mean- achievement through personal exertion of mind or body, then all the valuable at tributes of activity, vigilance, skill perseverance and power will ex pand and strengthen by continual practice. There are many for tunate men who are not successful . men . n - whom the world has miled from their birth up, who have enjoyed the benefits of a good home, a good education, of loving friends of much assistance and encouragement and ample opportunities, who yet do not snceed because they depend on these things, and fail to put forth their ow n powers, and to exercise their own talents and abilities. And there are others who are uccesftful in spite of many priva tions and misfortunes. With few early advantages of training or tinea tion, with little help and many discouragements, they yet work hard and struggle manfully, and tbrougti struggling ain a a power and stamina which com mand Huccess in whatever they undertake. It is indeed always a problem for wisdom and intelli gence to solve, how far external advantages continue to be advan tageous, and where kindness cerses to be kind. A recent writer jys, with truth: "There is a kind of aid which it is immoral for a friend to give, and equally immoral for another to receive ; it is the aid which takes the p'ce of some work we ouht to have done, tome energy we ouht to hve put forth, some strength and power oi character we ought to have at tained." What is time true of success is in the main also true of defeat; it comes trotn within rather than with nit. Many per sons are in the habit of referring all their disappointments to some untoward circumstance-. There wm lack of opportunity or ad vantage ; some one else failed to do ' his part ; some untorseen difflcul-y arose beyond their power to overcome, or some ooposing force came in 'which no one could interact; the very "stars ia their courses fought against Sisera." But a keener insight ir. to their own nature would usual iy show them that a deeper cause was at work in their failure than any of these things ; that had they put forth more energy, or exer cised more patience, or been more brave and resolute, or had taken more precautions, these disadvant ages might have been overcome and these obstacles might have been conquered. Or, perchance, their defeat arose from an ambi tion too great to correspond with their capacities, and humbler ven tures might have proved success ful. Whatever it may have been it was probably the result of an internal defevt, or error of judg ment, or 'ack of energetic acMon and when that is discovered the first step Las been taken toward turning pnst failures into future succe.-s. It is not opportunity or friends or fortuitioua circumstance? that chiefly determine our success ; it is the spirit within us, of which Goethe speaks whon he says, "Life lies oefore us as a huge quarry lies beyond the architect ; he deserves not the name of an architect except when out or' this fortuitous mass he can combine with the greatest economy ami fitness and durability some form, the pattern of which originated in h'f spirit." Alta is hard after tiusls. which is coinmend-tble. It savs that an ammonia trust has been formed The short ice crop has caused ammonia to advance, because it is necessary in making artificial L-e. The country will get its nose to this ammonia combine and then the Courts will cork it up. Ureal Slaughter. G. W.
