M i Tmtv California horses are fast gainioV'the name of being the lasted in the world. Already they have-ibroken the record, and the Iuturjmaiie8 even better things.. It is &id that Sanator Stanford re Cretajiaving sold to Robert Brontes- the horses that are gain ing such remarkable fame. -t- OsiW the peculiarities of easten J sWarMmen. seems to be th. . facili-H with which he can desei , bis sept in congress, and absent i LimsfHf from his sworn dutie. Very2fl'ton tne course of lega tion i obstructed in this manner and the length of the session ex tended simply because a working quorgp is not. present. Somt sixty,., members it is said were absent recently without any sufficient cause-. Mas. Hansen has brought suit, in oar neighboring state of Wash ington, against the saloon-keeper, in w'oee place her husband drank himself to death, for damages. If the courts adjudicate the case by allowing her the damages then theywill preach as strong a tem perae'ee sermon as has ever been ottered, and in justice and right can pursue no other coarse. Tax action of France in causing the arrest and punishment of Russian exiles because they were manufacturing and experimenting with explosive compounds, savors too much of subserviancy to Russia to be compatible with a free repub lican government. Russia's way of imprisioning or exiling to Siberia on mere supicibn will not do for a liberal republican govern ment. Tax investigations set on foot by the recent loss of life, in the terrible cyclonic lake disaster in Minnesota,, have evolved the fact that the so-called life pre servers upon tbe steamers were of no use whatever in that capacity. It is said that some of them con taining bottles thrown into the lake sank immediately to the bottom. It is certainlv time that such matters should be looked after in a manner to make them wftat they propose to be capable of sustain ing a persons weight in the water. It seems in this vase that tbe official who baa charge of inspect ing these articles, had approved them as all right. If such be the vase there is certaiuly one official that does not know bis business, and should be promptly surer ceded. The returns of the census will show many and weighty proofs of the advancement of our country on the road to being the leading nation on the globe. It is aid that the returns will indicate that . the population oi the United States exceeds 65,000,000. This shows a growth of 15,000,000 in ten yeaas. The Chronicle deduces from this that the free trader who grows querulous over the failure of the United States to export as largely of manufactured and other products will perhaps find an ex planation of this in the phenome nal increase of population. The want of these 15,000,000 new peo ple represent a trade infinitely greater than the whole external trade of Great Britain. Our uiitn nfactorerp have been hard pressed to keep abreast of the demands, bat their facilities are being in creased so rapidly that they will ia the near future be able to easily J supply them and have some to spare. When that time comes it will b seen that protection in the long run is no obstacle to foreign trade. In the beginning the system is bound to militate against external trade, because the theory of protection is to depend upon foreigners for what can be pro duced at home. But in our efforts to provide for our own needs we will develop resources which will enable us to compete successfully with the rest of the world. Railroad corporations, like in dividuals, very naturally desire to acquire 'all they can and in their eagerneas so to do make discrimi nation that are unjust. To estab lish this point it is not necessary to go into facts and figures ; it is within the memory of every person who reads, or who bas business sufficient to. have ever had ship ments by railroads that such is the case. The fact has been acted upon more or less by every state in the Union including Oregon. Of course it is to be expected. .nd quite naturally too, that the rail roads should object or counteract such enactments as much as possi ble, but that does not lessen the necessity for them, nor the neces sity of making those enactments effective in their work. If the present ones are not effective make them so, but do not give up the vantage ground of having something to work upon. It is very easy to fall into a popular clamor, raised for the very pur pose of gaining a desired end, to repeal wnat is apparently at present in unsatisfactory. It is quite another affair to advocate the right whether the floating crowd parti ally swayed by the hopes of parti san gain go that way or not Census .Supervisor Kelly gives estimates of population as follows: Koseburg, 2300; fcugene, J2UU; Salem, 7200; Oregon City, McMinnville, 1400; Grant's Pass, 3250 ; Jacksonville. 1200 ; Uorvaliis, 2200; Ashland, 2700; Hillboro, 1600; Albany. 7000.
