Thk expression of public opinion upon the subject of the stove in railway carriages has been that it is to dangerous to remain in use, and therefore it nmet go. This view of the matter bus been brought about by the terrible accidents that have been caused by the fire in cars arising from the Btoves setting tire to the de molished coaches after general smash ups and the overturning of derailed cars. Recent experiments on eastern roed9 show that steam from the engine as a beating Hgent is far superior to any other system in use. It has been shown that the engine of a long train can supply sufficient steam to heat thr cars without interfering with its tmc tion power; that the temperature can be regulated satisfactorily that 19, to everybody except a few cranks who ilways find a public conveyance too hot or too cold ; and that the steam can le cut off from one car without interfering with the supply for the r- st of the train. The question of beating railway trains by steam has passed beyond the sphere of experiment into that of demonstration. Proot of this, it fin ther proot were needed is supplied by the fact that one important company, in its dt'wire to keep abreast with the times and give its passenuers the best, there is to be had, has adopted a system of steam-heating. The statistics prei.iiietl in refer- ezce to the use of steam in passen ger cars are full of significance and promise. About o e found of the entire passenger rolling-stock in the country, including baggage and sleeping cars 7.:'J1 raisin all is now equipped for steam heat. On 8,466 miles of railway all the passenger trains last winter were heated without stoves, and com panies controlling S2,!78 miles of railway liuve at least liegun to equip their cars with the new sytem. The reports of eighty-one companies "show that steam-beating has been, on the whol, very successful, and that many difficul ties feared when the system was first introduced have not proved serious in practice. The state of New York was in strumental in bringing about this result by placing a law upon her statute books compelling the use of steam in heating heating pass enger coaches. REefBLics are said to be an apt to be without gratitude as any of the old monarchies, and in some cases it is almost appareut that such is the fact, but mainly repub lics remember services and muni ficently reward. One of the cases of remission appears, according to all reports, in the case of the aged mother of I.ieutem-iitl'ushing w ho gained renown through his galbnt action in bow ing up the Aleiiiarle during the rebellion. It is very truthfully said that if the toother of l.ieuteiient Cu-hing be rt ally in want tiie government should do something for her t how its recognition of the service? of her brave sou. whi-e deed" werene. er sufliciently rewarded. The hlow ina up of the rebel ironclad Al bemarle is admitted by competent naval critics to be an exploit un paralled in the war for nerve, dar ing and skill. Cushing then a beArdles'd youth, wan expus-d ti a ! murderou fir.- uhilt- he guitled j the torpedo to its plat e and pulled j tlie lines that eii-l.Hlcil it. Ihisti work required the nicest calcula' tioii, as a premature expltx-ion would have caused lit'le damaKe. He escaped by a miracle, his clotiiea bfillji riddled witli bullets, f It vtur service v .deli should have insured hi immediatt- promotion, but he died nhortly aiter, tiill a lieutenant, though he had done more utxd work in his brief life IUKU UIOUJ av uau " . iorma in a half century of service-1 In thought, probably of the , trouble growing out of adjusting the present censuo bueinfW! it U j remarked that the. census of the I : City of London, which is probably I Li." . .. :.. ... toe most accurate ue . , world, IS completed in an hour, and that hour between 11 and 12 at IllgUl. IOC WUIh IB ny m7 police, and the theory is that dur ing the hour named the yreat Mlli. jority of people will be found at their homes, if they have any, or. at least under shelter of some kind. It may be stated, however, that the jMjlice are notxpeeted to obtain the entire family history of each citizen or to inquire minutely into his physical andinancial con dition. Thk St I-ouis Republic is worry ing for fear that all of the fresh water on the surface of the earth, under the present rapid rate of li in u nit ion, will disappear in about the year 2,0OO.0tXi. The Reublic better hurry up and perfect a patent machine for ex tracting fresh water from rock salt. The outcome of the efforts of the city of Portland to have a new count on the census enumeration, hears the moral that there is no use in kicking, but when the work is completed it is better to g'in and bear the situation as portray ep then to the object and have the objections over ruled thrown out of court as it were.
