TheyJJnever allow the so called unruly member to work in jury to any person, of course, but their is neighbor who dot's talk unmercifully. But a careful investigation per haps would develop the fact that the application of the thre words is more general than many would surmise. It is not the malice aforethought that always given the venomous sting and cruel injury to the lan guage that is uttered. More often it is the thoughtless idle words, dropped without care and with no harmful intent that causes the in jury that is irreparable. Words should le carefully weighed before they are uttered, and even matters that may be in a degree facts, should be put into words with care, and with a direc: reference to the prospect of injury to the character or wounds to the feelings of the persons spoken of. With this view of the case and every just and sympathetic person will concide in this view with what strong invective should wc condemn the practice so often in dulged in, of repeating idle words of rumor that have not a single foundation in fact, nor the resem blance of truthfulness in them but which nevertheless, when repeated as they too often are by reputable people, pierce like a two edged eword the very, inmost feelings of the hearts of int ocent people. Especially is this the case when those idle words are made in connection with the name of some revered one who has crossed the river of death, and for whom on that account the false words should be doubly barred against It during life no faults can be found, after death the tongue of rumor should be forever silenced How very important then that the tongue should be guarded, and no idle rumor be suffered to drop therefro m. cussion. Experience has shown that where a small percentage misuse their opportunities - the great majority know how to turn them to good account. The gener al adoption of the eight-hour day will result in elevating the mass of workmen from mere mechanical toilers to thinking workers. The opportunities foj education, dis cussion, and social intercourse will inevitably tend to make them better citizens and better work men. They will gain in every way and the country will be the better for it. That is a point of view which should not be lost sight of by workmen or employers in considering lue eiuht-hour problem. It is not simply a ques tion of work and wages hut one also of mental and social improve ment. The workmen will elevate himself in the social e-ale by t'ason of the iiicrwixed opportuni ties which we will know how to turn to account and he will nu' look down on his work rtecau; oi his higher social grade. The work will g-in dignity with the work men. The matter of s-hutring out th. traffickers, who prey upon 'In- tourists who visit th- woinlt-rfu' fills of Niagara, has bi-en a con stant effort of the state of New York for years. The environs of the falls were made a public park or reservation, and the trafficking hack drivers prohibited, but still they manage to ply their trade and fleece the visitors without stint. Further legislation is ca'Ied for and will be made but it is doubtful if it will cure the matter. The hack driver and the leeches will thrive in nouie matter. -5 V 'x . tap i i "nM&tlMPTI n i s r k c r c ..tupa llT 'umimi.cs.miiLia:. I III .ev A ! The probable compromise, as outlined in our dispatches, will result in a law requiring the pur chase of $4, oOO.OUO of silver month ly, which will have emitted against it legal tender certificates. If the bullion redemption feature which appeared in the original House bill is stricken out the bimetallistb will have achieved a great, al though not a complete, vicotory. That will only be obtained when the two metals, gold and silver, are placed ou an equal tooling and accorded the privilege of free coin age on a fixed ratio. In all proba bility so large a purchase as $4,500-. 000 worth of silver monthly will have the effect of equalizing the commercial and legal ratios of silver. It certainly will if the cal culations of the statisticians are not all at tault. We suppose, when this stage if reached, the most obstreperous optonent of sil ver will not oppose granting the white metal the same rights as that are accorded to fcold.
