with continental Europe, by
making a passage either over the
channel by means of a bridge or

certain timid persons in England

tion of anything of that kind, for
fear that the French people would
march over, by its means, and
capture the British Isles,
It is impossible to imagine any
thing more senseless than this
trepidation on the part of the
Britons. An engineer, to allay
such fears proposes to have the
British shore end land at a pier so
that it can be disconnected with
the land. The British actually
seem to think that if the tunnel
were once const racted there would
be noway of rendering it impassa
able, but that a French army
could march through it at pleasure
and capture England without any
difficulty. And yet the English
must have heard of dynamite, and
must have some idea of the powers
of that explosive, since not long
ago few dynamite cartridges found
in the poeession of certain dis
affected men scared London nearly
out of its wits.
To any one except an English
man it would seem to be the
easiest thing in the world, in case
of threatened invasion, to blow up
the shore end of the channel tun
nel and let the water in, so that
a French army in the tunnel would
have a wetter time than Pharaoh's
hosts in the Red sea. The usual
experience with tunnels is that
there is a constant struggle to keep
the water oat, not to find a way to
let ft in. The scheme of this
young engineer may have some
special merit not apparent on the
surface, but if all that he claims
is the ability to cut off connection
with the shore, it is certain that
that could be effected quite as
readily by a dynamite cartridge
connected with an electric battery
on the mainland, even as far dis
tant as London, if thought desir
able. be words of Gen. Sickles, in

ton, have a very good significance.

Tub Baptist College at McMinn
ville, is talking of moving to Port
land, to increase ita facilities and
influence. The Oregonian says
that Rev. T. G. Browuson, presi
dent of the college, is in Portland
for the purpose of laying the prop
osition before the citizens. The
intention is to place the college on
broad basis, to give it a more
distinctive character, ami to pre-i
pare it for larger usefulness, in a
wider field, than heretofore.
These are the objects in proposing
removal, and they are to ne offered
for consideration of those citizens

faster in England than it is in this

been popularized over there it may
take roo sufficiently in this
boasted land of freedom to germi
