Senator Squire of Washington if using everv endeavor to get the repeal of the timber culture act. The influence of the Mormon and the silver legislation in eoii- irresa, is said to control the cffoi tf for the admission of Idaho and Wyoming keeping them bark. Rats is one of the elements of nature that in greatly needed in this department of the earth's surface. The crops are beiiitr materially shortened bv la.;k of it. A Clackamas county citizen, of 56 years of age recently took hi? first ride on the can, going too and from Salem. He will probably move on with the rest of the world hereafter. The new democratic sheriff of Baker county owes his election to one voter, as that was all the majority he had. There will probably be scores of persons ask ing favors upon the strength of easting that on vote. Another step in the projrreM of ballot reform is marked by Oov ernor Abbett's signing the bill en acted by the New Jersey Legisla ture. This was known as the Werta bill, and was the only measure on the subject which the Democratic Assembly at Trenton would look on with favor. Whin annexation of Canada with our country comes, it will be by the voluntary action un the part of that country and not by any solicitations from this side of the line. It is said that some of the leading officials of Canada are already expressing a desire in that direction. The lienefit to accrue will be to Canada princi pally and not to this country. Thk recent session of the drunk ards, which convened in Missouri, had undei consideration the ques tion of divorce. A majority of them were in favor of recognizing the validity of that much talked of practice of modern humanity, but a minority were so oposed to its recognition, that in order to prevent a permanent difference they adjourned further action for one year. Meanwhile if any of their members are so inclined probably they will enter the legal courts for divorce. Gratifying progress is being made in the direction of reducing the number of desertions from the army. The returns for six months part show that this evil is rapidly decreasing, those for April being the most striking of all. The number of desertions reported for that month was Itt' about 100 less than for the corresponding month of 1S8!, in spite of the fHct that April is nsually a time when many men yield to the temptation to leave the army. Even without the additional legislation on the subject, which is considered de sirable by those who have the best interest of the army at heart, At is evident that a noteworthy advance has been made in the curtailment of. this demoralizing; practice. Thk old aphorism that old dogs cannot learn new tricks, does not always apply, Japan at leust itirn ishes a case in which, after mh-ihI- I ing fifty years at brewing beverages a man turns his attention to scientific pursuits and learns en tire new tricks so to speak. This individual was Ino Chukci, who deserted fifty years of brewing and devoted himself with ardor and" determination to the aquini tion of knowledge xesperting his native islands. After seventeen years of continuous lalor. during which he travelled with quadrant, azimuth, circle, compass and clock over every square acre of the Ein- j pire, he produced in 1818 a survey of the country which has formed tk basis of every map since made. rTht re is sonu'tliuig inspiring the thought of this night f this cientilie drudgery and ,k - rsever - brewer's ance in years so knowledge became the paamou of his life and he completed his sur veys in the true scientific spirit. Several memoirs have been written on Ino Chukei's practical skill and painstaking care as acartographer but bis fame was rapidly passing out of men's minds when the pro posal was made to erect a monu ment at Shiba, with in sight of his first station in beginning his sur vey. This monument ha recently been unveiled with imiosing ceremonies, and the fame of the brewer of Japan will be commem orated forever. Thk story from Turkish Columbia to the effect that the illicit scalers have arranged to pursue the busi ness of stealing seals with the aid of a swift steamer ha.- an air ot probability aliout it. The cruisers of the United States in Behring sea are lamentably slow tub-, and a moderately fast loat could sail away from them. A couple of years ago we made ourselves ridiculous by manning prizes cap tured in the net of taking seal it ti insufficient crews, with tlu result ot the captured running away with the captors. It would not be a verv creditable thing if this misinanag.'ment were par alleled by patrolling the disputed sea with vessels incapable of over hauling a second-rate steamer. If we intend to maintain our posi tion we should at least do so in a dignified manner. The United States is growing too large a nation to be made a laughing stock of as it will be if it cannot entorce its proclamations. lo Nut Mix.
