It would be a good idea for every bead of family to prepare and have in readiness against the Arrival of the census marshal a complete answer to all the intero gatories. The work of the enu merators would be greatly facili Lated by such a course, and the householder would be saved the appearance of an inquisition. Ik Senator Beck's will does not carry the approval of the court, it certainly ought to have their respect on account of its age if nothing else. It is said to have lain in wait for the Senator's death for thirty-five years. One of its provisions is said to be that his sons-in-law shall not have any control of their wives property. Apparently he was a practical women's rights man. In view of the universality of gas as an illuminative in cities and the many fatal accidents arising therefrom, the issuance of a small book, embodying the sug gestions for the treatment of those overcome with gas, as they were made in a recent meeting held in Toronto, would not be amiss. But if those suggestive treatments could be made to guard against the gas poured out by the biped usually anathematized the bore, they would be more thoroughly appreciated. If the McKinley bill becomes the tariff lay, which in all proba bility it will, the result will demonstrate whether the estab lishment of home manufactures really cheapen articles to con sumers. Take for instance the the tariff on tin, which has been made a principal bone of con tention in arguments on the sub ject. The advoctaes of free trade dread to see the tariff on tinned iron increased sufficiently to pro mote its manufacture in the United States, for they know in their inmost hearts that in the event the price of all kinds of tin ware will be greatly reduced, just ae the prices of glass, iron, cotton and other manufactured goods have been reduced, the creation of great competing industries in the United States. The thing has never failed yet, and will not in the case of tin, and the free traders therefore dread the experi ment. A Washington special says the squadron of evolution, which had come to be known as the white squadron, has been ordered to Brazil, and from there they will go to Buenos Ayres and Montevideo. Later in the season it will go through the straits of Magellan and op the west coast of South America to show the people of the Southern republics that the United States has a navy. From Panama it will proceed to San Francisco, where it will he joined by the new cruiser Charleston, and the four big ships will proceed homeward by the way of the Cape of Good Hope. Next year a 6l mi tar squadron consisting of the Bal timore, Newark, Philadelphia and the dynamite cruiser Vesuvius will be sent on a similar voyage ior a similar purpoee, to show the world the United State can build ships of which any nation might be proud; and the year following it ie expected that another tleet will be ready for a similar voyage, composed of three or four ot" the inest ships afloat. Thk action Ot the Prefchyterian General Aseemhly. that recently sdflnad its session at Sarntogo New York, although continuingfor the present the old creed but making provision for a revision committee, seems to have been imbued with wisdom and prudence and a very commendable spirit otj liberal toleration on all sides. Two! ...... j distinct ana inimical iHrimiis ( existed the revicionists and the Bti-revisioni"ts yet they worked armony and nr.rengtiieneti me general cause when it was thought that the diffe rences were a source i of remedial weakness. The Tri-: bune savs that 8everal things have settled by the action of the Gen eral Assembly in regard to the momentous questions ol Creed revision that came before it. First of all. the legitimacy and ( possible moderate revision of the I Westminster Confession within the next two years, winch is now indicated. It means that the Church is committed to the policy of keeping its doctrinal Standards in harmony with its contempor aneous belief. And it can only do so by revising oi modifying those Standards whenever they cease to express its current belief of thought on fundamental matters. In the second place, the whole question of revising the West minster Confession is made of secondary inijxjrtance by the ap pointment of the committee to formulate a new Creed in con junction with the Reformed Churches of the world holding to the Presbyterian system. That such a common Creed, brief and simple in its statements, will ulti mately be adopted by these great churches is almost certain. And when it is adopted, nearly all the present popular interest in the Westminster Confession will die out. For it will be regarded no longer as sharply defined (state ment of belief, the acceptance of which involves eternal salvation, but as a venerable record of the Church's theological position in an age of fierce religious con troversy. The result of the election, as tar an Linn county is concerned, is to leave the republicans in the noup 200 deep. All right, but oome day you know it is a long lane that has no turn and the repub licans will live and enjoy jut-t hh good county regime as the demo cratic officials choose to give us.
