Michener, the t andidate for superintendent of schools on tue republican ticket, is a native 01 inuiana ana tor eignteen years a resident of that state, he was raised on a farm and received a good common school education In 1880 lie went to Kansas and at once engaged iu teaching, at the close of his second term of school feeling the need of thorough pre paration for his chosen prfession, he entered the Kansas Normal college as a student, completing the teachers course, in 1SS-J. two years were spent in teaching dur- ing which he won the name oi heing one of the ablest and lore- most teachers in his coitntrv. Returning to college iu 1kn; In completed the scieutilic course in 1888. ranking among the very best in the class of lit;. Coming to Oregon soon after he ha? been and is still actively engaged iu educational work. Mr. Michener is highly recommended as an edu cator and a gentleman, having excellent testimonials from lead ing educators in the east, promin ent among whom are President Sanders of the Kansas Normal, and president of the state teach ers" association. President Stryken f the Central Normal college, I'rofs. (iaines and l.unsdoii of Ft. Scott, Kansas. Snpt. Drumback and a number of schools in which lit has Wen engaged as a teacher, lie has recently In-en teaching in I. inn county and has made an ex cellent reputation. Mu is at pres ent principal of the public schools at Tangent. lie should receive a handsome majority in June second, as there is no doubt but that by his elec tion the public school interests of the county would be in good . hands. The slips and turns of the free trade advocates are numerous if not amusing. Very often they could almost le denominated lapsus lingua if not by a harder name. Thus it is shown that they inform us that the abolition of the duty on sugar will never be noticed by the consumer, because the refiners, importers and dealers in the article will make no reduc tion. In other words, they say in Mie case of sugar the tariff is not tax, but that its price is fixed absolutely regardless of the fact that there is a duty of about '21.. cents a pound. These same con sistent logicians assure us that if a tariff is placed on tin, which would amount to almnt half a cent or so in the cost of a dinner pail, that the price of the pail would be doubled. This method of argu ment only exioses those resorting to it to ridicule. The tariff is either a tax, or it isn't, and the democrats should lind out w hich assertion they prefer and stick to it. Tin: true inwardness of the Union party business will prob ably le worked for in Umatilla county. John A. liross a most worthy and well qualified man foi the position is the candidate for the state senate on the republican ticket. Whi. Matlock is the nom inee of the democratic party. Mr. Gross is a farmer and stood way ,iht-ad in the race for the office : until t he t'nioii party nt in nom ination W. A. Sample, a republi can, ami a coiupetcnt, active, aixl well informed jrentleiuai), who in ilso a fanner. Tin- penult looked for if that Mr. Sample while there is not the rentotei't chance of his election will draw enough ; votes from Mr. Gross to elect Mat- j lock. That is about all there is in ! the I'nion party hiiRiiieis this vear, anl if 1t turns that wav I 1'iuatilla county y ill ha a thou-! sanl times the loser. Ik Governer IVnuoycr considtrd , himself sell-appointed to annul the supreme court, and decide up- j on tu constitutionality ot laws. himself, how lonjr world it he )-' fore he would attempt to prorogue the legislature, establish hi own i conception of the constitution,, and j set himself up as thej autocrat of the state govern-; ineiit as a life long dictator and virtual owner ot the entire j institution. Certain it is that his ! past action induces a wholesome apprehension that just such a course might be attempted. I Thk most efficient, active and popular superintendent of public instruction that Oregon has had is Hon. K. R. McKlroy, and he has done more to advance the cause of the public schools in Oregon then any other man in the state. , It behooves the voters to see that he is retained in the josition, even if Rev. I.eKov does accuse him of being a plagiarist, l'rof. McElroy's originality can bear the test of intimate personal ac quaintance, and the charge of bis Rev. opponent will not estrange manv votes from Prof. McElrov. Thk question. Who shall control j popular education? has become a j leariinx ismie in almost every civilized country. In the United; States, Canala, Australia, France, Oerniany, Auntria, Italy, the United Kingdom, and other coun tries, the church is struggling to retain or get possession oi the schools. It is a hopeless battle. A public non-sectarian system oi popular education is the very foundation of civic liberty. The j state can not sacrifice it without j aiming a blow at its own life. xtjir ro-iA r. i The Celebrated Funck CURE Warranted rvire aFEoDTOT or uieiiry re fundea the :enerativo urcaos of either sax whether ; arming from the exesseive naa at .tiinnliuw, . tobaceo or opium, or tbronga autbful India. : cretioo, over inlulceaco, etc. roth aa law at ' Rram Powar.
